The Department of Materials wishes to appoint a Research Associate to join the Bio-Active Materials Group of Professor Jonny Blaker in the Department of Materials, School of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Science and Engineering, The University of Manchester. The role involves working on spinning recombinant silk fibres as part of the SPINS project, funded by EPSRC, based at The University of Manchester in the Henry Royce Institute. You will work on microfluidic spinning of novel recombinant spidroins and collaborate with other research associates focused on design, expression, and high throughput screening methods. The goal of SPINS is to develop an engineering pipeline for designing, expressing, and testing novel chimeric mini-spidroins, enabling access to a broader range of engineered spider silks for various applications.
You should be a conscientious, innovative scientist with a PhD in Materials, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related field. Experience in fibre formulation, spinning, and characterisation is essential. The position focuses on developing microfluidic wet-spinning techniques, optimizing spinning conditions, and high-throughput fibre screening and characterisation. The role involves collaboration with other project researchers.
