Job Title: Postdoctoral Research Associate in ‘Environmental Monitoring and Communication’

Directorate: School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society (EGIS)

Contract Type: Full-time (35 hours per week), Fixed Term for 18 months

Purpose of the Role: This position will enable active engagement between project academics, project partners, and stakeholders to support mangrove rehabilitation in Suriname and Guyana.

Detailed Description: We seek a motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate with experience in environmental and sustainability research, focusing on environmental monitoring and communication. The candidate should have a strong background in field-based natural data collection and communicating complex scientific results to diverse audiences, including local communities and policymakers. The role involves leading data collection, analysis, visualization, and translating findings into civic science, educational programs, and policy recommendations. The position is based at the Lyell Centre, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, and involves collaboration with teams in the UK and Suriname.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and lead communication among project partners and the wider society, including designing and maintaining project information channels such as websites, social media, press releases, and policy briefs.
  • Lead the collection, quality assurance, visualization, and interpretation of environmental monitoring data, maintaining communication with the Suriname team.
  • Provide training on environmental monitoring analysis, data archiving, and interpretation to the Suriname team.
  • Manage a central project database for environmental and social science data, ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Collaborate with project team members to maximize data outputs and insights.
  • Organize outreach activities, including lectures, community workshops, and symposia.
  • Build and maintain relationships with non-academic partners and stakeholders in Suriname, Guyana, and beyond.
  • Contribute to academic publications and project reports, focusing on environmental monitoring results.

Note: The role may require international travel and flexible working hours.

About our Team: The project, ENHANCES, aims to enhance coastal protection and biodiversity through mangrove conservation, involving remote sensing, stakeholder engagement, and policy development, supported by UK and international partners.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • PhD or higher in environmental sciences, communication, or related fields.
  • Experience in engagement strategies connecting communities and stakeholders.
  • Understanding of climate-environment interactions.
  • Experience in environmental monitoring, data interpretation, and natural sciences.
  • Strong communication skills and experience in training and public speaking.
  • Proficiency in digital media and website management.
  • Publication record or equivalent.
  • Teamwork, initiative, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working in Suriname or Guyana, or similar contexts, is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of Dutch is advantageous.
