Job description

Applications are invited for an exciting opportunity to join The University of Manchester's team at RAICo One Facility in Whitehaven, UK. RAICo One is a state-of-the-art robotics lab located on the edge of the Lake District National Park, in West Cumbria. The University of Manchester Robotics for Extreme Environments Group is at the forefront of nuclear field robotics, deploying robots in nuclear facilities and extreme environments both in the UK and internationally.

Role Overview

This position is for a Research Associate to work on the Smart Robotic Swabbing System for Nuclear Environment Characterisation (SRSS-NEC) project. The project integrates various technologies developed by our group to enhance manual swabbing for nuclear environment characterization through robotics. Key developments include a modular swabbing puck with tactile sensors for sensory feedback and autonomous swabbing capabilities, including motion planning and control optimization.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Develop a robotic swabbing system.
  2. Conduct user studies to evaluate efficacy.
  3. Develop automatic control algorithms for swabbing operations.
  4. Program, test, and deploy real-world mobile robots.
  5. Integrate hardware and software components effectively.
  6. Work independently to high standards and communicate effectively with team members and industrial partners.
