Environment & Sustainability Grand Challenge - Sustainability Mission

There is an increasing immediacy in our discussion around climate change, with many experts expecting keeping global temperatures below +1.5°C pre-industrial levels to be impossible. This indicates an urgency in how we decarbonise, we can’t wait for net-zero solutions, we must act now. AI provides methods to immediately reduce emissions and fight climate change.

Our mission is to support transport and infrastructure to reduce emissions. Working with Lloyd’s Register Foundation (a global charity supporting research, innovation, and education in engineering) we have developed Data-Centric Engineering approaches to assist and drive the implementation of Data Science, Machine Learning and AI into transport and infrastructure.

We are open to any skill set where the candidate believes they can contribute. We are looking for people who are interested in thinking creatively, to develop their own research ideas and to take onboard the ideas of others. Our priority is to attract technically strong researchers who are interested in asking bold new questions.

DUTIES AND AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Undertake high-quality research into AI/ML/Data Science
  • Work with industry to deploy these novel approaches
  • Potentially go on secondment to learn new skills and embed research into industry
  • Engage the public and government on issues related to AI/ML/Data Science, in particular ethics and responsibility
  • Publish and dissimanate research outputs
  • Cultivate strong relationships with stakeholders

Person Specification

  • PhD (or near completion) in a relevant technical or scientific discipline.
  • Strong quantitative background, and preferably experience with Multi-Agent AI, Reinforcement Learning, and Large Language Models.
  • Interest and/or knowledge of AI, Machine Learning, Data Science, and/or Data Engineering techniques and principles.
  • Experience in publishing research papers, code libraries and technical reports.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate successfully with colleagues in a multidisciplinary environment

Terms and Conditions

This full-time post is offered on a fixed term basis for 21 months. The annual salary is on £45,505 plus excellent benefits, including flexible working and family friendly policies, Employee-only benefits guide | The Alan Turing Institute

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant at a salary of £45,505 per annum.

The Alan Turing Institute is based at the British Library, in the heart of London’s Knowledge Quarter. We expect staff to come to our office at least 4 days per month. Some roles may require more days in the office; the hiring manager will be able to confirm this during the interview.
