Job description

Verisk is looking for a highly passionate, motivated individual to join the Extreme Event Solutions Research team in London as a Research Associate. As a member of the Research team, you will promote research efforts of our international team through the interpretation and continuing improvements of our models and products. Verisk’s catastrophe models include earthquake and hydro-meteorological models (e.g. tropical cyclone, hail, flood) which account for climate change that has already happened and in cases, estimations of future climate change impact.

You will use your scientific, technical and analytical skills to work with clients, research organisations and universities to enhance their awareness, understanding and information exchange with Verisk. You will foster relationships with the Research teams in Boston and work closely with Consulting and Client Services and Business Development departments in London.

Responsibilities
  • Thorough understanding, interpretation and explanation of Verisk’s models to clients, prospects and academia.
  • Helping clients reliably assess and manage their catastrophe loss potential through interpretation of modelling results and after model updates.
  • Contribute to the development and internal evaluation of Verisk models and support clients in model evaluations and regulatory requirements for a major model change.
  • Creating and giving presentations to clients and research organisations, for example on existing models and model change, as well as writing technical documentation.
  • Working on innovative projects requiring own research. This may be for internal R&D purposes or for external consultancy projects within the insurance sector.
  • The development of tools and models to solve problems on bespoke basis directly for clients and as part of Verisk’s wider model development.
  • Representing Verisk at industry and academic conferences, presenting Verisk models and original research in oral and poster sessions.
  • Following latest industry trends, research in your area of expertise and the potential for participation in post-disaster field surveys.
  • Collecting, interpreting and analysing scientific and engineering information.
Qualifications
  • Very strong analytical and quantitative skills, a solid understanding of probability concepts, excellent problem-solving skills and a commitment to a client facing role.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, time management and organisational skills are required.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication is highly desirable, particularly the ability to communicate complex ideas simply and effectively.
  • The ability to motivate and inspire research-based discussions amongst colleagues is desirable.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office is essential.
  • Ability to code in languages such as SQL, R, Python will be beneficial. Knowledge of ArcGIS would be desirable.
  • Prior experience in the visualisation and communication of risk e.g. via animations, video, infographics or other means would be desirable but not essential.
  • Knowledge of Touchstone and Touchstone Re is desirable but not essential.
  • Knowledge of insurance and reinsurance and the Lloyd’s market is desirable but not essential.
  • An interest in working with big data and machine learning algorithms is welcomed.
Education Requirements

You will have a PhD or MSc in applied natural science or engineering, which might include one of the following preferred disciplines: Meteorology, Atmospheric Physics, Climate Science, Earth Sciences, Geophysics, Applied Mathematics, Structural Engineering (relating to natural hazards). For those educated to a MSc level, additional years of research experience may be required.
