Job Description:

We are seeking a Research Assistant to join the Simões Group at DPAG-IDRM. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated scientist with hands-on laboratory experience in molecular biology and cell culture techniques, strong organisational skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. In this role, you will support cutting-edge research in cardiovascular development and regeneration, including laboratory maintenance, zebrafish husbandry management, molecular biology experiments, and cell culture work. This position is available from October 2025 at the earliest and is fixed-term for 12 months from the start date.

Flexible working: While this is a full-time role, applications from individuals seeking part-time or flexible arrangements are welcome, subject to operational needs.

Key responsibilities:
  • Maintain laboratory organisation, stock control, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards
  • Manage zebrafish breeding colonies and conduct experiments according to Home Office regulations
  • Perform routine molecular biology techniques and prepare samples for analyses such as flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, and sequencing
  • Conduct 2D and 3D cell culture techniques, including maintenance and optimisation
  • Assist with advanced techniques including CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing and single-cell approaches
  • Contribute to project planning, data analysis, and scientific report and presentation preparation
  • Train new staff and students as required
Selection criteria:
  • Degree in biological sciences, biomedical sciences, or related field, with understanding of developmental, cell, and molecular biology principles
  • Hands-on laboratory experience in molecular biology and/or cell culture techniques
  • Strong organisational skills for laboratory operations
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Excellent communication skills, including record-keeping and data presentation
  • Ability to adapt and learn new techniques with attention to detail
  • Experience with zebrafish models (desirable)
  • Experience with human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) or organoid cultures (desirable)
