Job Description:

A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on a European consortium project, UP2030. UP2030 aims to support cities in driving the transitions required to meet their climate neutrality targets (see: ). The University of Cambridge is leading activities on data governance and city-wide carbon management.

The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

The key research and scholarship responsibilities and duties of this role are:

  • Plan and manage research activities.
  • Support an investigation into carbon management in cities, with a primary focus on retrofit, transport and urban greening. This will involve reviewing available data sources, planning and managing primary and secondary research on data collection, management, quantitative analysis
  • Lead in publication outputs in appropriate academic and industry fora.

The role-holder will also have management, liaison and networking responsibilities.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are:

  • Relevant background experience may include urban studies, policy, systems engineering, civil engineering, construction management, climate mitigation
  • A PhD is desirable but not required. Other industry, city government or research experience that demonstrates the capability to produce independent original research is also desirable.
  • Very good communication skills and excellent written English skills.
  • Evidence of ability to compile and analyse quantitative and qualitative data, prepare reports and present results to summarise main research findings and conclusions.
  • Ability to work independently.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD (or equivalent experience). Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 December 2025 in the first instance.
