Research and Trials Manager

The Research and Trials Lead will oversee the design, implementation, and evaluation of rigorous research and trials to determine what works in global safety. This role is crucial for ensuring that the evidence centre produces, and helps develop, high-quality, impactful research that informs policy and practice.

The role

Technical Professional

Research Leadership and Strategy

  • Develop and implement a research strategy in alignment with the centre's mission and goals
  • Lead a programme of research grants and projects, alongside Evidence Centre and Foundation colleagues, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment
  • Ensure the research agenda addresses key policy and practice questions

Research and Trials Management

  • Design, oversee and conduct randomized controlled trials (RCTs), quasi-experimental studies, and other rigorous research methodologies both quantitative and qualitative
  • Developing theory of change models and evaluation plans for interventions
  • Develop and implement policies and methodology for research and trials projects, reviewing the policies regularly to incorporate learning and from developments in the field
  • Oversee and conduct data collection, management, and analysis to ensure accuracy and reliability
  • Ensure all research activities comply with ethical standards and regulatory requirements

Reporting and Capacity Building

  • Supporting the use of primary research evidence in decision making including capability and capacity building (evidence literacy)
  • Develop, maintain and grow tools and guidance to enable others in the field to produce appropriate evidence (capacity and capability building)
  • Publish research findings and present at conferences

Professional Development

  • Stay updated with the latest methodologies and best practices in evidence synthesis
  • Contribute to the development of new tools and guidelines to enhance the evidence synthesis process including new technological developments such as AI and multi-language synthesis
  • Maintain and build professional network in the evidence field

Delivery and Organisational

Project Management

  • Manage the scope, timelines, and budgets of evidence synthesis projects
  • Coordinate with internal teams and external partners to deliver projects on time
  • Monitor and report on project progress and outcomes

Stakeholder Engagement and Communications

  • Collaborate with policymakers, practitioners, and other stakeholders to identify evidence needs
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including funders, policymakers, and practitioners
  • Manage partnerships with academic institutions, government agencies, and other stakeholders
  • Interpret and communicate research findings to diverse audiences, including policymakers, practitioners, and the public
  • Translate complex evidence synthesis findings into accessible formats for diverse audiences
  • Present findings at conferences, workshops, and other forums, representing the centre at national and international forums

Teamwork

  • Supervise and mentor junior researchers, staff and teams involved in research and trials work
  • Foster a collaborative and supportive team environment
  • Provide training and development opportunities for team members, promote the use of evidence-based practices within the centre and among external partners
  • Project delivery across all areas of the Foundation's work as required

What you bring

Education & Experience

  • Masters or PhD in a relevant field
  • Minimum of four years' experience in managing, designing and/or conducting rigorous research and trials

Skills & Knowledge

  • Proficiency in methodologies such as randomized controlled trials (RCTs), quasi-experimental studies, and longitudinal studies
  • Knowledge of qualitative research methodologies and theories of change
  • Proficiencies with analytical and research software and tools
  • Strong leadership and team management skills
  • Excellent analytical and statistical skills
  • Proven track record of managing complex projects and delivering high-quality outputs
  • Proven track record of publishing, communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders

Desirable Attributes

  • Experience in a policy or practice setting
  • Knowledge of the specific field of focus e.g. safety, engineering, maritime, skills, critical infrastructure and its operational and decision-making contexts and processes across sectors
  • Strong network within the evidence community
  • Candidates must provide work authorization for the respective country.
