Job description

Market Insights Executive

Location: South Devon | Hybrid

Salary: £40,000 - £45,000

Please note: Due to the office location and limited public transport links, applicants must be able to drive and have access to a vehicle.

About the Company

We’re working with a growing South West business that is looking to add to its team as part of its next stage of development. This is an opportunity for someone who is naturally curious, commercially aware and interested in the world of technology. You’ll be joining a small, ambitious team where you’ll have the freedom to think independently, take ownership and make a genuine contribution.

The role could suit someone from a research, analyst, journalism, consulting or market intelligence background who enjoys investigating unfamiliar subjects, engaging with a wide range of people and turning complex information into meaningful commercial insight.

The Role

This is not a traditional desk-based research role. You’ll research companies and developing market categories, speak directly with businesses to understand their products, positioning and challenges, and turn what you learn into clear, useful insight for the wider team.

Preparation is an important part of the role. You’ll need to understand who you’re speaking to, know the right questions to ask and be confident enough to probe further when an answer doesn’t quite stack up. You'll be speaking with knowledgeable product and technical specialists, so the ability to communicate clearly, challenge information constructively and hold credible conversations is essential.

There won't always be an established process to follow. You'll need to create structure, take ownership of your research and determine the best approach to reaching well-informed conclusions. You’ll work across multiple topics at once, combining independent research with external conversations and collaboration across the wider business.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Researching companies, products and developing market categories.
  • Investigating unfamiliar subjects thoroughly, evaluating different sources and identifying reliable information.
  • Carrying out detailed preparation ahead of external calls and meetings.
  • Speaking directly with businesses to understand their products, positioning and place within the market.
  • Leading conversations, asking thoughtful questions and confidently challenging assumptions or unclear answers.
  • Producing clear, concise research briefs and well-supported recommendations.
  • Identifying trends, gaps and useful market intelligence.
  • Taking ownership of research projects, establishing effective processes and managing competing priorities.
  • Sharing relevant insight with colleagues across the business.
  • Supporting outreach and developing relationships with external contacts.
  • Using AI and digital tools to make research faster and more effective without compromising on quality.

What We’re Looking For

You’ll be someone who enjoys finding things out and is comfortable moving between detailed research and conversations with external stakeholders. You don't necessarily need previous experience in technology, but you should have a genuine interest in the sector and enjoy getting to grips with new products, markets and ideas.

We're looking for someone who combines intellectual curiosity with the drive to investigate subjects independently and the credibility to communicate confidently with experienced professionals.

We're particularly interested in people who are:

  • Strong researchers who prepare thoroughly, investigate beyond the obvious and think critically about the information in front of them.
  • Confident and credible speaking with senior external stakeholders and technical specialists.
  • Comfortable asking probing follow-up questions, challenging vague answers and exploring different perspectives.
  • Able to absorb complex information quickly, identify what matters and explain their conclusions clearly.
  • Sharp, concise communicators, both verbally and in writing.
  • Proactive and self-motivated, with the ability to create structure and progress work independently.
  • Highly organised and comfortable managing several projects at once.
  • Commercially aware and interested in how businesses operate, compete and differentiate themselves.
  • Comfortable approaching and building relationships with new people.
  • Interested in technology and confident adopting new digital tools.

Essential Skills & Experience

You don't need to come from a particular industry, and deep technical knowledge isn't essential. We're more interested in your ability to research rigorously, think critically and hold an intelligent, informed conversation.

You could be a strong fit if you have:

  • Experience conducting independent research into complex or unfamiliar subjects.
  • Experience interviewing, questioning or engaging with external stakeholders or subject matter experts.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to explain and defend your findings.
  • The ability to evaluate conflicting information and turn large amounts of research into clear, evidence-based conclusions.
  • Experience taking ownership of projects and developing your own approach where there isn't an established process.
  • Confidence using digital and AI tools to support research and analysis.
  • A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle due to the office location.

A relevant Master's degree or strong academic research background could also work well, particularly if you can demonstrate strong communication skills and commercial awareness. Equally, we're interested in people who have developed these capabilities through professional research, consulting or investigative work.

Why You’ll Love This Role

You’ll be joining a small team where you’ll be trusted to think for yourself and given plenty of variety in your work. You’ll gain exposure to interesting businesses and evolving areas of technology, while developing a valuable combination of research, commercial and stakeholder-facing experience.

There's also scope to help shape how research is carried out, improve existing processes and potentially take on broader responsibilities as the business continues to grow.

If you enjoy learning, asking intelligent questions and want a role that combines rigorous research with real conversations, we’d love to hear from you.
