The Research and Finance Manager (RFM) will proactively oversee departmental research and finance operations and ensure the implementation of the Department’s research and finance strategy on a day-to-day basis. You will be a focal point for the management of the research and general ledger portfolio and other similar externally funded activities in the Department.

We are looking for a proactive and independent individual, able to work under their own direction and as part of a team.

You will support academic staff acting as a key and pivotal contact and source of information for research and financial queries within the Department, including acting as a conduit between the Department, Faculty, Research Services, and the Contracts Management Team. You will lead and manage a team of finance administrators to provide expert and comprehensive support across the Department.

You will provide advice to the School Management Committee and the Research Committee on the current and future research portfolio and other strategic aspects of departmental administration in this area. You will support the Director of Operations in the analysis, forecasting, annual budgeting round, and end-of-financial-year process, and provide continuous monitoring and tracking. You will be responsible for the implementation of Imperial’s financial policies on all transactions, and develop and continuously improve department processes and policies related to finance and research support.

We are looking for someone who holds an undergraduate degree, or has equivalent experience, preferably in a STEM subject, with proven experience in:

  • Higher education research and finance management and administration, ideally gained within an academic department and/or central service.
  • Developing and managing financial resources, including preparing, managing, and monitoring budgets and the preparation and analysis of management reports to inform financial and strategic decision-making.
  • Utilising information technology to manipulate data and provide management information reports.
  • Managing people, including team building, coaching, motivation, and managing performance.
