Job summary

Positive Employment is recruiting a Rent Income Officer for a local government organisation in Kensington, London. The role focuses on maximising rent collection by recovering arrears and enforcing tenancy conditions, with early intervention to prevent debt and homelessness.

This is a 6-month contract with hybrid working. The post holder will liaise with Housing Benefits, DWP, and other agencies, maintain records and report performance indicators to the Rent Income Team Manager.

Qualifications

• Previous Rent Income Officer experience
• Knowledge of public sector housing and rent arrears issues
• Customer service experience
• Good numeracy and IT skills
• Ability to draft letters, memos and reports to a good standard
• Strong communication and negotiation skills when working with residents, colleagues and external agencies
• Ability to keep accurate records
• Ability to work with minimal supervision, show initiative and make decisions
• An understanding of housing and welfare benefits, or a housing-related degree or qualification, would be desirable

Responsibilities

• Monitor tenants’ rent and accounts; act per procedures
• Recover rent arrears; interview and visit homes
• Prepare court papers and attend court for arrears cases
• Create/manage use/occupation accounts; monitor payments
• Advise tenants on housing benefits to maximise income
• Refer vulnerable tenants to support agencies
• Attend tenancy sign-ups and six-week visits to advise on rent and debt
• Administer payment methods (online, phone, cards, Direct Debits)
• Work with Sundry Debts Officer to pursue former tenancy arrears
• Liaise with Neighbourhood Officers, Benefits, DWP, courts, etc.
• Maintain records and report KPIs to Rent Income Team Manager
• Keep up to date with Welfare Reform and brief/train staff
