Job Introduction

Rent Officer

Make a real difference to people\'s lives

At Bromsgrove District Council and Redditch Borough Council, our customers are at the heart of everything we do. We are looking for people who are passionate about helping others, confident in having difficult conversations, and motivated by achieving positive outcomes.

You may not currently work in housing, and that\'s okay.

If you have experience supporting customers, managing challenging situations, solving problems, collecting payments, negotiating solutions, or helping people access support, you could already have the skills we\'re looking for.

We value attitude, behaviours and potential just as much as direct experience.

About the role

As a Rent Officer, you\'ll be responsible for helping tenants sustain their tenancies while ensuring rental income is collected fairly and effectively.

No two days are the same. You could be:

  • Supporting a tenant who is struggling financially and helping them access benefits or support services
  • Working with residents to agree affordable repayment plans
  • Visiting customers in their homes to understand their circumstances
  • Building relationships with partner organisations to help people succeed
  • Investigating cases and taking appropriate action where rent arrears occur
  • Representing the Council in court proceedings when necessary
  • Finding solutions that balance compassion with accountability

This is a role where strong communication, resilience and problem-solving skills are just as important as technical knowledge.

Who We're Looking For
  • Put people first, treating everyone with dignity, respect and understanding.
  • Communicate effectively, influencing and negotiating to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Stay calm and resilient under pressure, focusing on solutions.
  • Are organised, accountable and able to manage a varied workload.
  • Enjoy problem-solving, identifying risks and opportunities to achieve the best results.
  • Work collaboratively, building strong relationships with colleagues, customers and partners.
Transferable experience we would love to hear about

You may have gained relevant experience in:

  • Housing or homelessness services
  • Debt collection or income recovery
  • Benefits advice
  • Banking or financial services
  • Social work or support services
  • Probation, policing or criminal justice
  • Charity or community work
  • Complaints handling
  • Enforcement or compliance roles
  • Case management roles
  • Healthcare or welfare services

This list isn\'t exhaustive. If you\'ve developed the skills described above in another environment, we\'d like to hear from you.

What you\'ll bring
  • GCSEs or other relevant Level 2 qualification.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people.
  • Experience of managing difficult conversations and achieving positive outcomes.
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills.
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service.

We will support successful candidates to develop their knowledge of housing management and social housing practice.

What you\'ll get in return
  • A rewarding role where you can make a genuine difference to people\'s lives
  • Opportunities for professional development and qualifications
  • Supportive and collaborative team environment
  • Flexible and agile working arrangements
  • Generous annual leave entitlement
