Job summary

SILA Linguists is recruiting freelance Tigrinya interpreters and translators for immigration, legal, healthcare and children’s services assignments. Work is offered remotely and in person to qualified linguists in the UK.

Responsibilities include interpreting for Eritrean and Tigrayan clients with neutrality, translating Ge’ez-script documents into English, and upholding confidentiality. Experience with medical/legal vocab is valued.

Qualifications

• Native or near-native fluency in Tigrinya and English, spoken and written.
• A recognised interpreting/translation qualification (e.g., DPSI or DPI) or equivalent experience.
• Amharic or Arabic language skills are an advantage.
• DBS check, or willingness to obtain one, for assignments that require it.
• Right to work in the UK for on-site UK assignments.
• Need a dependable internet connection and a confidential space for remote interpreting.

Responsibilities

• Interpret for Eritrean and Tigrayan clients with neutrality on political and community matters.
• Translate Tigrinya documents written in Ge'ez into accurate English.
• Interpret accurately and impartially while keeping information confidential.
• Research subject-specific vocabulary before assignments, especially medical and legal bookings.
• Translate and proofread documents carefully and query unclear source text.
• Transcribe and translate audio/video recordings if you have transcription skills.
