Job summary

Polaris Children’s Services is seeking a SENDIASS Support Worker to provide confidential, impartial information, advice and support for families affected by SEND. The role involves casework with children and young people, including EHCP processes and SEND legislation guidance.

The position is 31 hours per week on a 12‑month fixed-term maternity cover contract, home-based with travel to regular meetings in Richmond and Kingston. Training in SEND law is encouraged within the first year.

Qualifications

• Qualification in SEND law or willingness to work towards IPSEA SEN Law Training Level 1, 2 and 3 within the first year of employment
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Strong knowledge of the London Boroughs of Richmond upon Thames and Kingston upon Thames, including local communities, services, schools and support networks
• Personal or professional leadership experience and ability to manage complex conversations with stakeholders
• Confident using Outlook, Microsoft packages and databases

Responsibilities

• Provide individual support to a caseload of children and young people with SEND and/or their parents
• Support customers with EHCP applications, SEND tribunals, attendance issues, social care provision, exclusions and SEN support
• Explain documents, co-writing applications, attending meetings or mediation with customers, monitoring deadlines and representing customers at SENDIST appeal stages
• Explain and refer to SEND legislation and policy when providing advice
• Use eligibility criteria and outcomes documents to set expectations of the support provided
• Signpost to and engage translation services, accessible forms and other support services as needed
• Proactively support self-advocacy by children, young people and parents
• Encourage customers to complete tasks themselves where possible
• Work at least one advice shift per week handling helpline calls/emails
• Listen to parents/carers/young people and provide information and advice to enable self-advocacy
• Maintain accurate records of advice and support
• Keep database records of casework details and documents
• Foster relationships with Local Authority SEN teams to achieve positive outcomes
• Contribute to content and resources for the SENDIASS website and social media
