Job summary

DURHAM UNIVERSITY invites applications for a Research Assistant in Kirigami Mechanics focusing on FEA and reduced-order analytical modelling. The role supports the EPSRC project on Kirigami-Based Energy Dissipating Devices led by Dr Martin Walker.

The successful candidate will develop Abaqus simulations of metallic kirigami, help write research papers, and support student projects. The post is fixed-term to 18 December 2026; in-person and remote work are possible, with UK residence required.

Responsibilities

• Understand and convey information through presentations, discussions and meetings to produce research reports and publications.
• Write up results and present progress to supervisors clearly and accurately.
• Analyse research using existing methodologies to achieve objectives.
• Address problems affecting objectives by discussing with the PI and proposing solutions.
• Liaise with colleagues to develop knowledge and collaborations.
• Contribute to planning of research projects.
• Assist in supporting student projects using research methods and equipment.
• Foster an inclusive, respectful working environment.
• Engage in citizenship to support the department and discipline.
• Engage in professional development by attending training.
