Qualifications

• Substantial experience in journalism, or in AI safety/governance, with depth in the other.
• Track record of making consequential calls on incomplete evidence.
• Ability to tell a well-argued case vs. a well-presented one.
• Comfort discussing six- and seven-figure commitments with editors/leaders.
• Ability to write funding recommendations that are concise and persuasive.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate funding opportunities and determine appropriate funding levels and grant types.
• Identify and fund important AI journalism projects; scope, call for proposals, and direct outreach.
• Manage relationships with grantees after funding; monitor progress and renewals.
• Shape the program by designing evaluation methods for grants of different sizes.
• Collaborate with the Program Specialist to ensure complementary grant awarding.
• Help grow the team as Tarbell expands its Institutional Grants program.
