Job summary

Lightning AI is hiring a Research Engineer to advance post-training AI systems across the ML stack. You will build, evaluate, and scale training workloads, and contribute to open-source projects while collaborating with research, product, and infrastructure teams.

The role blends ML engineering, software development, and platform work in a fast-moving startup environment, with hybrid work and in-office days at hub locations including London.

Qualifications

• Experience building, training, evaluating, or experimenting with deep learning models.
• Hands-on experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals and debugging skills.
• Curiosity and ability to learn new technologies quickly.
• Excellent communication and collaboration across teams including research and product.
• Comfortable in fast-moving, ambiguous environments with evolving priorities.
• Bachelor’s degree in CS, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

• Develop and post-train models, and build systems to run, evaluate, debug, and scale training workloads.
• Build software, tooling, and platform capabilities for researchers, developers, and customers.
• Contribute to open-source projects and collaborate with the broader developer community.
• Work across deep learning systems, tooling, backend services, and infrastructure.
• Collaborate with customers to understand real-world AI workloads and translate learnings into improvements.
• Prototype ideas, evaluate approaches, and turn experiments into production code.
• Partner with research, product, and infrastructure teams to improve developer experience and AI workflows.
• Debug complex ML and distributed system problems and learn new technologies quickly.
