Job description

The Family Workers are responsible for the day-to-day running of the Visitors Centre. They are the first point of contact for visitors attending and support the development of a space that is welcoming, comfortable, and conducive to meaningful engagement for both adults and children.

They will ensure the timely and efficient processing of all visitors and support collaborative partnerships between family members, the team, and key prison staff to provide a wraparound, person-centered service.

Rota: Flexible to service needs, mainly for weekend shifts.

ABOUT THE SERVICE

We understand the stress of visiting loved ones in prison. We support families during visits through:

  • a warm, friendly welcome;
  • a family-oriented environment;
  • information sessions about prison processes;
  • emotional support before and after visits;
  • play activities for children.
ABOUT YOU

You possess excellent communication, IT, organization, and support skills. You value relationships for personal development and are creative in influencing others. You maintain a positive, non-judgmental attitude and work well with diverse individuals and stakeholders. Training in experiential programmes, security, and key training will be provided.

  • Support the Visitors’ Centre to meet quality standards.
  • Welcome and inform visitors, including first-time visitors.
  • Develop and supervise child-friendly spaces and interventions.
  • Plan and promote meaningful family visits.
  • Promote Safe Ground’s work and collaborate with community partners.
  • Work with the team to meet performance targets.
  • Build relationships with internal and external partners, including prison staff and community services.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and develop the service for continuous improvement.
  • Complete safeguarding and other referrals as needed.
  • Participate in reflective practice and supervision.
  • Maintain confidential records in line with policies.

Additional responsibilities may be assigned as appropriate, within the capability of the role.

KEY CRITERIA

Essential:

  • Experience working with children and families.
  • IT proficiency and ability to learn new software.
  • Ability to persuade, empower, and influence positively.
  • Understanding of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of social and societal stigma related to criminal justice involvement.
  • Experience in prison or criminal justice settings.
  • Professional qualification or working towards one.
