Guided by our core values of Customer Obsession, Earn Trust, Self Awareness, Ownership and High Impact, we collaborate closely with our customers to deliver solutions that meet complex needs and drive success.

Mattermost is seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative Release Engineer to drive the reliability, quality, and efficiency of our software release processes. As part of our globally distributed Engineering team, you will work closely with development, QA, operations, and security teams to design, implement, and maintain robust release pipelines for our on-premise and SaaS offerings. You will play a critical role in ensuring that software changes are built, tested, packaged, and delivered to customers with high confidence and minimal friction.

This role blends technical expertise in build and deployment automation with a passion for process optimisation, tooling improvements, and cross-team coordination. You will help shape and enforce best practices around release processes, CI/CD pipelines, and artefact maintenance to maintain consistent, high-quality releases across multiple target environments.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Design, maintain, and improve build, packaging, and deployment pipelines for product releases
  • Collaborate with engineering, QA, and operations teams to define and enforce release management processes, schedules, and quality gates
  • Ensure reproducible builds and artefacts through well-defined versioning, branching, and tagging strategies
  • Develop and maintain tooling to automate release workflows, including test automation, packaging, and artefact distribution
  • Monitor and optimise CI/CD performance, ensuring fast feedback loops and reliable automation
  • Partner with security and compliance teams to ensure releases meet regulatory and security requirements
  • Perform root-cause analysis of release-related issues and implement preventive measures
  • Continuously evaluate and adopt new tools and technologies to improve release engineering efficiency and reliability

Requirements:

  • BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience, plus 3+ years of relevant experience in release engineering,
build and deployment automation, CI/CD pipeline management, or related software engineering functions
  • Strong understanding of software release engineering principles
  • Strong understanding of CI/CD systems, and deployment automation
  • Experience with modern build systems, artefact repositories, and containerisation (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Strong problem-solving skills with an ability to debug and resolve build, packaging, or deployment issues quickly
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for working in a distributed, async-first environment
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across multiple teams and time zones

Preferences:

  • Familiarity with monitoring, logging, and metrics for release pipelines
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible, Helm)
  • Experience working in highly regulated environments (e.g., Department of Defense) and familiarity with applicable compliance/security standards (e.g., DISA STIGs, FedRAMP)
  • Experience with release automation in cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure)
  • Understanding of secure software supply chain practices (e.g., signing, SBOMs, vulnerability scanning)
  • Contributions to open-source projects or experience working in open-source communities
