Job description

This ensures that police members are fully aware and accountable for the powers entrusted to them and the professional standards they uphold.

Regulatory Lawyer

The Regulatory Lawyer will provide legal advice and representation under the general direction of the Director of Joint Legal Services (JLS). As a Solicitor, you will work collaboratively with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders to serve the Chief Constable and Police and Crime Commissioner for Staffordshire and West Midlands Police.

Your main responsibilities include advising on disciplinary proceedings, preparing cases for misconduct hearings, advocacy at hearings, drafting charges, and advising on strategy, risks, and disclosure for the professional standards department. You will also handle inquest files, engaging with the Coroner, Coroner's officers, Counsel, and attending pre-inquest reviews and inquests.

Responsibilities:

• Advise and represent in legal proceedings and hearings before Courts & Tribunals, including advocacy where required.
• Prepare inquest files, statements, disclosures, and advise on high-profile cases and Article 2 issues.
• Instruct Counsel and prepare for misconduct hearings.
• Collaborate with external legal services, including Counsel.
• Provide timely legal advice and guidance on public order matters.
• Manage a complex caseload, providing advice and advocacy as needed.
• Draft legal documents.

Experience and Qualifications:

• Legal qualification (or expected within 3 months) as a Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive.
• Experience in areas such as police discipline/misconduct, public inquiries/inquests, public order, or other regulatory work.

Additional Information:

Interviews are scheduled for Wednesday 6th August and possibly Thursday 7th August.

Applicants must pass Management Vetting and Security Clearance, including a background and financial check.

Medical checks, including drugs and fitness tests, may be required prior to appointment.
