Job description

Registered Veterinary Nurse - Join a Supportive, Locally-Run Practice in Newbury

Are you a Registered Veterinary Nurse looking for a role where your experience is genuinely valued, your development is supported, and your part of a close-knit, professional team? If so, this could be the opportunity you've been waiting for.

At Vets for Pets in Newbury, we’re proud to be a locally owned and managed practice. This means decisions are made by people who work on-site and understand what it’s like to be in your shoes. We’ve built a team where everyone feels supported, respected and part of something meaningful.

About the Practice

We’re a modern, purpose-built small animal surgery equipped with everything we need to deliver high standards of clinical care, including equipment such as a new VetSEAL Vessel Sealing Unit, diathermy machine, a new high grade ultrasound machine, orthopaedic equipment for a variety of procedures, ECG, multiparameter monitoring unit for anaesthesia, oscillometric/Doppler blood pressure monitoring units, and soon-to-come Idexx SediVue Dx Urine Sediment Analyser for much improved and convenient assessment of urinalysis in-house.

You’ll be joining an experienced team of 5 Vets (including 3 Practice Partners), 2 Registered Veterinary Nurses (including nursing manager), 3 Student Nurses, 1 Senior Veterinary Care Assistant, 1 Veterinary Care Assistant, 3 Receptionists (including Head Receptionist) and a Practice Manager. It’s a well-balanced team where everyone plays a valuable role and contributes to a positive working environment.

You’ll have the chance to use your full nursing skill set from anaesthetic monitoring to inpatient care and recovery, nurse consultations, triage assessment and assisting with discharges. You’ll also have the support of Veterinary Care Assistants with patient preparation and turnaround in theatre, so your time is spent where it’s most valuable. We’re passionate about nurses optimising their skills under Schedule 3 and welcome opportunities to do so.

We see a broad and varied caseload, including advanced soft tissue and orthopaedic procedures, so no two days are quite the same. If you're someone who enjoys learning and development, you'll find plenty of opportunity to grow here. Whether you're keen to expand your surgical nursing skills or pursue a particular clinical interest, we’ll support you.

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking a qualified Registered Veterinary Nurse with a strong foundation in general nursing and a commitment to patient care. The ideal candidate will be confident, conscientious, and keen to work as part of a collaborative and motivated team. A genuine interest in animal welfare is essential, as is a calm, approachable demeanour and a willingness to get involved across the full range of nursing duties. You’ll also need to bring excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to stay focused and organised, especially when the day gets busy.

The Role

This is a full-time position, working 40 hours per week, with participation in the weekend rota (currently 1 in 5). There are no out-of-hours shifts and no overnight inpatient checks, so you can enjoy a healthy work-life balance.

What We Offer You

We believe that a fulfilling role and a supportive environment make all the difference, and we want your time with us to feel both rewarding and enjoyable.

Here’s what we offer:
  • A competitive salary of £30,000 - £34,000 per annum, depending on your skills and experience
  • Certificates/CPD encouraged and funded by the practice
  • No out-of-hours or overnight inpatient checks
  • A focus on wellbeing, including regular lunch & learn sessions and team socials (summer and Christmas socials, and pub quizzes!)
  • Paid professional memberships (RCVS, BVNA, VDS)
  • A contributory pension scheme
  • 20% staff discount at Pets at Home, The Groom Room and Vets for Pets
  • Access to exclusive high street discounts and cashback rewards
  • Opportunities for genuine career development, supported by a leadership team who are on the ground and actively involved in day-to-day practice life
