Come and build a career where you can put your veterinary nursing skills into practice every day

If you're an RVN looking for more variety, more learning and the opportunity to develop your clinical skills alongside some of the most experienced veterinary professionals in the field, this could be the role for you.

At Davies Veterinary Specialists, you'll join one of Europe's largest and most diverse small animal referral hospitals, working alongside a large, experienced nursing team and specialists across a wide range of disciplines.

And you don't need referral experience to join us.

What matters most is that you're a qualified RVN, passionate about nursing and keen to keep learning. We'll give you the training, support and structured induction you need to build your confidence in a referral environment.

Why Davies?

This isn't a role where every day looks the same.

Our nursing teams work across wards, theatres and diagnostics, with dedicated teams in each area as well as a flexi team for nurses who enjoy variety and want exposure to different disciplines.

That means you can:
  • Develop your clinical skills across a genuinely varied caseload
  • Gain experience working alongside specialist clinicians
  • Explore areas you're particularly passionate about, whether that's theatre, diagnostics, inpatient care or another discipline
  • Take real responsibility for patient care and case management
  • Build your knowledge and confidence through hands‑on experience
  • Learn from a large, experienced team of nurses, clinicians and support staff
  • Continue developing your career through CPD, training and progression opportunities

Davies has a nursing and patient care team of more than 100 people, creating an environment where you're surrounded by colleagues who understand what good nursing looks like and can support you as you develop.

You don't need referral experience

If you've been working in first opinion and are ready for your next challenge, don't let the word "referral" put you off.

You'll receive a comprehensive induction to help you make the transition into referral nursing, with plenty of opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues.

We also offer nurse experience days, so if you're curious about referral nursing but want to see what life at Davies is really like before making the move, you can get to know the hospital and the team for yourself.

A hospital where you can really develop

Davies is a genuinely multidisciplinary environment. The hospital brings together specialists across areas including:

Anaesthesia | Cardiology | Diagnostic Imaging | Emergency & Critical Care | Internal Medicine | Neurology & Neurosurgery | Oncology | Ophthalmology | Orthopaedics | Soft Tissue Surgery | Dentistry | Dermatology | Therapy & Rehabilitation

The facilities include six wards, an intensive care unit, a dedicated cat ward, isolation facilities, five theatres and on-site diagnostic and laboratory services.

So whether you're already experienced in referral nursing or you're looking to take that next step, there is plenty here to get your teeth into.

Your development matters

We want you to build a career here, not simply fill a rota.

You'll have access to:
  • CPD allowance
  • Extensive learning and development programmes
  • Structured training and support
  • Career progression opportunities
  • RCVS and VDS fees paid
  • Comprehensive induction
  • Experienced nursing colleagues to learn from
  • Opportunities to develop within different clinical areas
A little more flexibility

We know that great nurses don't all want to work the same way.

Alongside our standard 40-hour Monday–Friday pattern with 1:4 weekends, we're also open to discussing:

Compressed hours

Part-time hours

So if flexibility is important to you, let's have a conversation about what could work.

And outside of work?

Davies is set in the Hertfordshire countryside, giving you a peaceful working environment away from the hustle and bustle of a city-centre hospital.

You're also close to Hitchin, a historic market town with independent shops, cafés, restaurants, markets and plenty of things to do. The surrounding countryside makes it easy to get outside and enjoy your time away from work too.

For commuters, Hitchin has strong rail connections towards London and Cambridge, while the area also has good road links via the A1(M) and M1. Davies itself has bus routes stopping close to the hospital.

What you'll receive

Alongside a salary starting from £30,000, depending on experience, you'll have access to a comprehensive benefits package including:

  • 5 weeks' annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Your birthday off
  • Enhanced family leave
  • Enhanced sickness support
  • Private Medical Insurance through AXA Health
  • Life Assurance
  • RCVS & VDS fees paid
  • CPD allowanceExtensive learning and development opportunities
  • Career progression opportunities
  • Staff discount schemes
  • PetPlan discounts
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • 24/7 wellbeing and people support
  • Gym membership discounts
  • Cycle2Work scheme
  • Eye care vouchers
  • Flu vaccination voucher

We also have Mental Health First Aiders across our practices and central support teams, alongside a confidential Employee Assistance Programme available to all Associates.

Could this be your next move?

Whether you're an experienced RVN looking for a new challenge or you're a first-opinion nurse ready to discover what referral nursing can offer, we'd love to hear from you.

If you're passionate about nursing, curious about referral work and want to develop your skills in a genuinely specialist environment, this could be the opportunity you've been looking for.
