Primary Function

Responsible for rendering professional nursing services, either directly or indirectly, for a defined group of patients according to the hospital’s philosophy of patient care.

Job Qualifications and Specifications

ICU Registered Nurses are expected to have:

1. I.V. certification
2. The ability to recognize all significant cardiac arrhythmias
3. A clear understanding of symptoms and clinical findings for myocardial infarction and its complications
4. An understanding of the needs of critically-ill medical and surgical patients
5. A thorough knowledge of the psychological and medical needs of patients and the importance of maintaining an environment free from noise and anxiety
6. Competence in operating all resuscitation equipment
7. BLS certification
8. Completion of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), with new graduates completing ACLS within one year of hire
9. Knowledge of hemodynamic monitoring and basics of Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumping
10. Attendance and completion of yearly competency assessments
11. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
12. Rhode Island state RN licensure
