Staff Nurse, Band 5, Division: Planned care. Responsible to: Gynaecology Outpatients Department Manager/ Senior sister. Accountable to: Lead nurse for Gynaecology and Early Pregnancy. Type of contract: Permanent. Hours per week: 37.5. Location: Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
Job Responsibilities
In accordance with professional regulations, Accept delegated responsibility for specific activities from the senior nurse in charge and work in line with Trust policies, objectives, protocols, and local guidelines. Provide high quality clinical care to patients in line with the Trust values and in accordance with NMC regulations. Work autonomously and as part of a team to deliver high standards of care to patients and their carers. Communicate in line with Trust values to patients, carers and staff at all times. Continue to develop, practice and expand general and specialist nursing skills. Support clinicians in the management and delivery of specialist gynaecology and early pregnancy clinics and the care and assessment for this group of patients. Maintain high standards of professional and ethical responsibility and accountability and be aware of medico-legal aspects of nursing in line with professional regulating and local guidance.

- Maintain a safe working environment respecting health and safety requirements of patients, visitors and staff.
- Practice in accordance with the NMC code of professional conduct and other professional guidelines.

- Implement infection control strategies to prevent cross infection.
- Protect patient confidentiality and report breaches in line with the Data Protection Act and trust policies.
- Report accidents, incidents and complaints and provide initial support for staff or patients in line with trust policy.
- Maintain clear and accurate documentation in line with NMC and trust standards.
- Be aware of clinical governance and its impact on patient care.
- Understand local audit processes and participate in local and trust-wide audits.
- Familiarise and read required local and trust-wide policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Take responsibility for teaching and education of pre-registration students as a mentor.
Communication
- Ensure effective communication between patient, relatives and multidisciplinary team; provide appropriate nursing input into patient care discussions.
- Use communication to support patient care and incident reporting as necessary.
- Communicate handover of care professionally.
- Demonstrate courtesy and sensitivity to patients, visitors and colleagues in line with trust values.

Education and Development
- Be responsible for personal professional development, maintain up-to-date clinical skills and ensure mandatory training is current.
- Be aware of current developments within gynaecology, nursing, and the NHS.
- Participate in team and MDT meetings and established research projects and clinical audits.
- Support ongoing development of the unit as a positive learning environment.
- Ensure own appraisal is up to date and personal development plan is completed.
- Work in a supportive way with learners and HCAs, providing knowledge and supervision.

Education and qualifications
- Registered Nurse on NMC register for 1 year (Essential).

- Mentorship/teaching/assessing course or willingness to work towards (Desirable).
- Post qualification in relevant specialty (Desirable).
Experience
- Ability to utilise experience to demonstrate understanding of the relevant setting (Essential).
- Post-registration experience in an acute hospital setting (Essential).
- General management skills (Desirable).
- Experience in a Gynaecology Outpatient Department (Essential).
- Experience in Hysteroscopy & Colposcopy clinic (Desirable).
- Experience in termination of pregnancy service (Desirable).
- Experience with research and audit (Desirable).
