Job description

Registered Nurse at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals – CoS Available

Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NNUH) is seeking a dedicated and skilled Registered Nurse to join its dynamic team. This is an excellent opportunity to work in one of the busiest and most respected hospitals in the East of England, delivering high-quality patient care across a range of clinical areas.

The successful candidate will be a Registered Nurse on the appropriate part of the NMC Register, with strong clinical competency and the ability to apply enhanced practice relevant to their experience and speciality. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as is a commitment to delivering compassionate, patient-centred care.

NNUH offers a supportive working environment with opportunities for ongoing professional development. The Trust offers a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) for eligible candidates who meet the Home Office criteria.

About the Trust

Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NNUH) provides healthcare to over one million people across Norfolk and surrounding areas. With a vision to provide the best care for every patient, NNUH seeks individuals who share its values to join a committed and compassionate team.

As the busiest Trauma Unit in the East of England, NNUH treats around 850 trauma patients each year, many with complex needs. The Trust is expanding its urgent and emergency care services with the ambition to become a Major Trauma Centre.

Guided by core values—People-focused, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, and Excellence—NNUH fosters a culture of continuous improvement and compassionate care. The Trust supports flexible working, including part-time roles and hybrid arrangements where appropriate.

NNUH is proud to be a diverse and inclusive employer and strongly encourages applications from underrepresented groups, including candidates from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, those with disabilities, and the LGBT+ community.

Position: Registered Nurse

Job Type: Full Time

About the Role:

An exciting opportunity has arisen at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital for motivated, enthusiastic, and experienced Band 5 nurses to join the General and Orthopaedic Preoperative Assessment (POA) team. This dynamic, nurse-led service plays a vital role in preparing patients for elective surgery across a wide range of specialties, including Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Gynaecology, Vascular, Upper GI, Colorectal, Breast & Endocrine, Urology, Plastics, ENT, and OMF.

The team supports both day case and Inpatient pathways, seeing approximately 400 patients per week.

The POA service is currently undergoing significant development, including the implementation of national initiatives such as “Waiting Well,” prehabilitation, and a new Digital Pre-Assessment System (DPOA) which provides a new pre screening element to POA meeting current GIRFT requirements.

Staff work closely with a multidisciplinary team that includes a nurse coordinator, pre op pharmacy and admin teams, prehabilitation practitioner, and anaesthetic support. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to quality improvement projects and help shape the future of surgical care.

Applicants should be committed to delivering high-quality, compassionate care and embody the Trust’s PRIDE values: People-focused, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, and Excellence. We encourage behaviours that support and promote an inclusive culture.

At the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital, our team consists of approximately 40 nurses and runs up to 11 face-to-face nurse clinics per day supported by our HCA (Healthcare Assistant) team. We provide a 7-day service although weekends offer a reduced service, weekend work will be rostered on a rotational basis.

We currently have a second city centre location which runs Monday to Friday 2 nurse clinics per day, new team members may be required to work at this location on an ad hoc basis.

POA offers a friendly, professional, and innovative work environment with a culture of strong teamwork and mutual support. Previous surgical experience is an advantage as is a good basis of nursing knowledge, including an understanding of medications and patient comorbidities. Our nurses are well supported by our HCA (Healthcare Assistant) team who assist with much of the physical side of the patient assessment, the nurse role is therefore generally much less practical. A good level of IT skills is advantageous as a variety of IT systems are required to complete a nursing assessment.

The Unit embraces the opportunity for individuals to gain leadership skills to co-ordinate clinic activity, to identify effective use of the clinical area and management of the patient booking system. This is in line with the Trusts People’s Promise and the service’s future planning.
