Job summary

Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust seeks a Registered Midwife to deliver midwifery care across pregnancy and birth, in hospital or community settings, within a continuity of carer model and 7-day service including nights.

You will join a multi-disciplinary team, lead on care planning and teaching, and contribute to achieving public health targets while maintaining high standards of maternity care.

Responsibilities

• 1) The Midwife works within all areas of midwifery and collaborates with other agencies involved in maternity services.
• 2) Responsible for high standards of care for mothers and babies, planning, implementing and evaluating care.
• 3) Recognises needs of each mother and family, provides care across environments and in all midwifery areas.
• 4) Provide total antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care and keep supervisor informed when medical support is absent; maintain records.
• 5) Respond to emergencies and reflect on practice after events.
• 6) Be aware of child protection concerns, liaising with Health Visitor and reporting to Named Midwife Child Protection.
• 7) Develop, implement and evaluate standards of care; base practice on evidence and participate in audits.
• 8) Develop clinical skills to care for labor in hospital or home settings.
• 9) Liaise with medical staff to ensure safe care following unit guidelines.
• 10) Participate in 24-hour on-call rota as appropriate.

Job description

The Registered Midwife will work as a member of the ward/department team, delivering midwifery care throughout the pregnancy continuum in the maternity unit or community settings to women and babies. The post-holder will be expected to join a continuity of carer team providing this model of care to women across a 7 day service including night duties.

After appropriate skills assessment, the post holder will be expected to act appropriately in emergency situations involving mother and baby. The midwife will take charge of the ward/department/team, in the absence of more senior staff. The midwife will be committed to achieving the Trust's targets regarding the Government's public health agenda.

The post-holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care. They are also expected to carry out all relevant forms of care and are designated to take care of a ward or equivalent sphere of nursing or midwifery in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility. The post-holder will be required to work in both the community and the hospital providing care within a continuity of carer model across a 7 day service including night duties. The post-holder is expected to supervise junior staff and to be able to teach qualified and unqualified staff, including basic and/or post-basic students.

1. 1.1 The Midwife works within all areas of midwifery and works with other agencies involved in the provision of maternity services.
2. 1.2 Responsible for the provision and maintenance of a high standard of care for mothers and babies, planning, implementing and evaluating care appropriately.
3. 1.3 Recognises that the needs of each mother and her family are unique and responds appropriately, throughout and across the variety of environments in which midwives practice. Competently giving care in all areas of midwifery, and prescribing care for women with normal pregnancies. Challenging care that is not evidence based.
4. 1.4 Is expected to provide total care for antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods and must keep the supervisor of midwives informed when medical support is absent for whatever reason. Maintaining contemporaneous records.
5. 1.5 Responds appropriately to all emergency situations, reflecting on practice following the event.
6. 1.6 Is aware and identifies concerns relating to child protection, liaising with Health Visitor and reporting to Named Midwife Child Protection.
7. 1.7 Is involved in developing, implementing and evaluating standards of care, practicing from evidence based care, participating in audit when required.
8. 1.8 Continuously develop clinical skills so that she is able to competently give care during labor either in the hospital or home setting.
9. 1.9 Liaise with medical staff, to ensure that a safe approach to care is given following the guidelines within the unit protocol
10. 1.10 Participate in 24 hour on call rota as appropriate.
