Job description

Amberstone is a 28 bed Recovery and Rehabilitation unit, situated in rural East Sussex (approximately 2 miles from Hailsham and 8 miles north of Eastbourne) and provides rehabilitation for adults who are recovering from serious mental illness. The focus is to enable people to reach their full potential and achieve a smooth transition into the community. The ward works closely with Community Rehabilitation colleagues as an integral part of the award-winning East Sussex Rehabilitation Pathway.

Overview

We are looking for a positive, resilient, compassionate, enthusiastic band 5 RMN to support our ward team in delivering an exceptional standard of care to our service users. This post is being offered as a full-time substantive opportunity and we are also welcoming newly qualified nurses into this post.

We offer regular, good quality supervision, appraisals, in-depth training and development opportunities. On the wards there is regular reflective practice, bitesize training sessions and a focus to develop and support our staff.

Working within a supportive clinically led team, you will have the opportunity to really work in partnership with patients, which really enables the recovery process. You will also provide leadership to junior staff, whilst providing supervision to junior staff and students.

Main duties
  • To provide clinical leadership to the team, lead decisions about the care of all of the patients.
  • To carry out basic nursing needs of a ward and to take charge of the shift when needed.
  • To carry out detailed assessment and risk assessment of the service users needs.
  • To develop care plans in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team
  • Plan and implement interventions with the service user that is responsive to the service user's needs
  • Monitor, evaluate and modify treatment in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team
  • To administer and monitor medication prescribed to individual service users, providing information and advice as required.
  • Work with the Ward Manager and other members of the multidisciplinary team to establish an effective therapeutic environment in which care can be delivered.
  • Promote effective communication between all of the MDT staff

Responsibilities

To communicate effectively with service users, family and carers; demonstrating an ability to be adaptable in the way they provide information which is sensitive to their ethic and cultural background and ensures that they are understood.

  • To act as primary nurse for service users within the inpatient setting.
  • To carry out detailed assessment and risk assessment of the service users needs through the utilisation of a range of assessment and interviewing techniques and gathering of information from a wide range of sources.
  • To develop care plans in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team that are based around the service users individual need, that is recovery focused and builds on their strengths and are outcome based.
  • Plan and implement interventions with the service user that is responsive to the service users needs that are applied in a stepped approach which will lead to a therapeutic outcome.
  • Monitor, evaluate and modify treatment in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team in order to measure progress and ensure effectiveness of the intervention.
  • To have the ability to deal with service users and their relatives in times of distress.
  • Liaise with and work alongside other teams and professionals to ensure the effective discharge of the service user from the inpatient setting.
  • To administer and monitor medication prescribed to individual service users, providing information and advice as required and complying with Trust and Nursing and Midwifery Council Policy on the administration of medication.
  • Work with the Ward Manager and other members of the multidisciplinary team to establish an effective therapeutic environment in which care can be delivered.
  • Promote effective communication between the MDT
Qualifications and Knowledge
  • Registered Nurse with current registration (mental health / LD/ Adult) appropriate to the job role
Knowledge/Experience
  • Knowledge of MHA (1983/2007)
  • Knowledge of Mental Capacity Act (2005), to include practical knowledge of FACE documentation, DOLS and Best Interest decisions.
  • Child and Adult safeguarding procedures.
  • Change management, organising and prioritising workloads.
  • Demonstrate ability to enhance care through evidence based knowledge.
  • Demonstrate professional development relevant to the care group
  • Demonstrates ability to assess and manage clinical risk
