- Working pattern: 10am - 4pm (1 hour lunch break included)

At Sodexo, as a Grounds Person at the University of Greenwich, Avery Hill Campus, you will support the smooth, day-to-day operation of the Winter Garden. This role involves carrying out essential gardening and maintenance tasks while ensuring all work complies with health and safety standards. You will play a key role in maintaining a welcoming environment for staff, students, and visitors.
What you’ll do:
- Maintain the upkeep and tidiness of the plants, beds, and paths within and around the Winter Gardens.
- Be a key holder – to open and close the building and ensure its security (closed for lunch for 1 hour).
- Perform gardening tasks including watering, pruning, propagation, digging, and weeding.
- Adjust ventilation, monitor and report defects in heating and watering systems, and clean internal glazing at low levels.
- Provide information to visitors about the building, its history, and the plants within.
- Supervise and report any inappropriate behavior.
- Familiarize yourself with the names and specific requirements of various plants.
- Assist in implementing improvements to planting schemes under supervision.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Work all weekends and Bank Holidays, except for Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day.
- Be available to cover 28 days of annual leave by prior arrangement.
- Attend relevant training courses related to your duties.
What you bring:
- Knowledge of health and safety practices and willingness to learn more.
- Experience working in community groups or similar settings.
- A keen interest in tropical and temperate plants, and the history of the building, with willingness to undertake further training.
- Experience working and communicating with the public.
- Experience using garden tools.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Adherence to Sodexo's health and safety and equal opportunity policies.
- Knowledge of pond plants and fish.
