Join a dedicated technical team committed to saving lives at sea. As a Regional Technician, you'll maintain and repair advanced equipment while collaborating with professionals across the North and East regions. With ongoing training and development opportunities, you'll enhance your mechanical and electrical skills in a supportive environment. This role offers a chance to make a real difference, ensuring high standards and precision in your work. If you're self-motivated and eager to learn, this is the perfect opportunity to contribute to a vital mission.
Our purpose is simple: to save lives at sea. This is your opportunity to be part of a cutting-edge technical team at the RNLI in North and East regions. We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated Regional Technician/Technician with mechanical and electrical knowledge who can collaborate with full-time staff and volunteers to maintain some of the most prestigious and technologically advanced equipment at the RNLI.
Development and training will be provided to fully utilize your skills and knowledge within the RNLI. We support a broad and interesting range of equipment and welcome enquiries from suitably qualified technicians.
You will be part of a dedicated, professional team working with Lifeboat Station Mechanics, Lifeguards, Contractors, and other technical staff to carry out planned maintenance, fault diagnosis, and defect repair on Lifeguard equipment, Lifeboats, and launching equipment across North and East regions. Ideally, candidates should reside in Suffolk or North Essex.
Part of your duties will include testing existing and repaired equipment, requiring excellent mechanical and electrical knowledge.
You should have a desire to stay current with existing technology and a willingness to learn and participate in the deployment and assessment of new equipment, which is constantly evolving within the RNLI’s search and rescue assets. A good understanding of electrical and electronic systems would be advantageous.
You will have completed a time-served mechanical apprenticeship or possess a strong background and experience in mechanical, electrical, and/or electronic engineering; minimum qualifications include NVQ Level 3 in England, Wales & Northern Ireland, SVQ Level 5 in Scotland, NFQ Level 5 in the Republic of Ireland, or equivalent in an engineering discipline.
If you do not hold these qualifications or experience, you may be offered a Technician role if successful.
This role is suitable for self-motivated individuals willing to go the extra mile. You should be capable of working independently or as part of a team, maintaining high standards with a first-fix approach to return RNLI search and rescue assets to service promptly. Openness to new ideas and training is essential.
A full driving licence is required, along with flexibility to work out of hours and participate in a call-out rota (currently 1 week in 8). Travel and overnight stays across the North and East regions will be necessary.
Beneficial but not essential qualifications include driving licence B+E (for towing), forklift licence, IOSH, Working at Height, PASMA, and PA testing. Training for these qualifications will be provided if needed.
The RNLI subjects its equipment to severe conditions, making precision, attention to detail, and high-quality workmanship paramount. If you believe you have the necessary skills and want to support us in saving lives at sea, you could be the ideal candidate for the RNLI Coastal Maintenance Team.
