Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Manage and ensure compliance with local and national environmental regulations, contractual obligations, and Amazon policy; represent Amazon at appropriate levels with governmental agencies.
  • Drive regional environmental programs by integrating with engineering, construction, and operations teams — fostering an environmentally responsible culture while maintaining environmental management processes and external accreditation.
  • Ensure work performed by contractors, consultants, and employees is completed in accordance with Amazon standards and Environmental Regulations.
  • Develop, analyze, and present environmental metrics to measure, monitor, forecast performance, and horizon scan for risk; effectively communicate insights to internal stakeholders.
  • Submit time-critical environmental reports to various governmental agencies.
  • Conduct thorough environmental audits and incident investigations, complete associated regulatory reporting, and develop and implement appropriate corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) in collaboration with operations and relevant stakeholders.
  • Contribute/lead environmental permitting processes, including preparation, submittal, and negotiation of permit requirements with environmental authorities.

The AWS Environmental team is an expanding and dynamic team that is critical to enabling AWS’s growth around the world, as well as ensuring compliance of AWS’s global operations, including physical data centers, as well as other AWS facilities, customer-facing enterprises and products.

The Environmental team has responsibility for developing and implementing AWS’s global environmental programs.

We are seeking an Environmental Engineer to support site development and environmental compliance in the London, UK region. The engineer will ensure standards and policies support regulatory operational compliance, and they will provide appropriate environmental guidance to regional operations teams. The individual will support environmental performance analysis, reporting, monitor metrics and guide the operations teams in implementation of Amazon environmental procedures. The environmental engineer will support new site development including environmental permit preparation, communication with the authorities and operational compliance. The environmental engineer will work with internal and external partners that include government entities, contractors, consultants, design, construction, operations and other key stakeholders.

The Environmental Engineer must have excellent communication skills, strong environmental regulatory knowledge including environmental permit preparation processes, demonstrated success in supporting roles for program development and management of complex and technical projects.

Basic Qualifications
  • Experience in a fast paced, dynamic organization
  • Experience in environmental compliance and permitting, waste management, contractual, regulatory, and liability assessments, environmental permit evaluations and applications, EIAs and water discharge requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, chemical or environmental engineering, or related field with 7+ years serving as an environmental technical resource, compliance specialist, or program manager.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities with experience in environmental reporting, documentation, environmental investigations and developing corrective actions
  • Ability to work under pressure, handle regulatory deadlines, with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong communication skills (English) with the ability to collaborate with various departments, external stakeholders, contractors, consultants, and regulatory agencies
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a data center or other critical environment, or experience in facilities management
  • Master's degree or equivalent in environmental field
  • Knowledge of environmental management systems (ISO 14001)
  • Knowledge of waste management and circular economy principles
  • Experience with environmental auditing and compliance verification
  • Understanding of climate change regulations and GHG reporting
