Job summary

AWS Infrastructure Services (AIS) in London is seeking an Environmental Engineer to support site development and regulatory compliance. Qualifications

  • 7+ years serving as an environmental technical resource, compliance specialist, or program manager.
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, chemical or environmental engineering, or related field.
  • Excellent problem‑solving and analytical abilities with experience in environmental reporting, documentation, investigations and corrective actions.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet regulatory deadlines, with strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Strong communication skills (English) with the ability to collaborate with various departments, external stakeholders, contractors, consultants, and regulatory agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and ensure compliance with local and national environmental regulations, contractual obligations, and Amazon policy; represent Amazon with governmental agencies.
  • Drive regional environmental programs by integrating with engineering, construction, and operations teams, fostering an environmentally responsible culture while maintaining environmental management processes and external accreditation.
  • Ensure work performed by contractors, consultants, and employees is completed in accordance with Amazon standards and environmental regulations.
  • Develop, analyze, and present environmental metrics to measure, monitor, forecast performance, and horizon scan for risk; effectively communicate insights to internal stakeholders.
  • Submit time‑critical environmental reports to various governmental agencies.
  • Conduct thorough environmental audits and incident investigations, complete associated regulatory reporting and develop and implement appropriate corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) in collaboration with operations and relevant stakeholders.
  • Contribute to or lead environmental permitting processes, including preparation, submittal, and negotiation of permit requirements with environmental authorities.

The AWS Environmental team is an expanding and dynamic team that is critical to enabling AWS’s growth around the world and ensuring compliance of AWS’s global operations, including physical data centers, other AWS facilities, customer‑facing enterprises and products.

Environmental Engineer (London, UK) – Established to support site development and environmental compliance. The engineer will ensure standards and policies support regulatory operational compliance, and provide environmental guidance to regional operations teams. Responsibilities include environmental performance analysis, reporting, monitoring metrics and guiding operations teams in implementing Amazon environmental procedures. The engineer will support new site development, including environmental permit preparation, communication with authorities, and operational compliance, and will work with internal and external partners including government entities, contractors, consultants, design, construction, operations and other stakeholders.

Key job responsibilities

Basic Qualifications
  • Experience in a fast‑paced, dynamic organization.
  • Experience in environmental compliance and permitting, waste management, contractual, regulatory and liability assessments, environmental permit evaluations and applications, EIAs and water discharge requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, chemical or environmental engineering, or related field with 7+ years serving as an environmental technical resource, compliance specialist, or program manager.
  • Excellent problem‑solving and analytical abilities with experience in environmental reporting, documentation, environmental investigations and developing corrective actions.
  • Ability to work under pressure, handle regulatory deadlines, with strong organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Strong communication skills (English) with the ability to collaborate with various departments, external stakeholders, contractors, consultants, and regulatory agencies.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a data center or other critical environment, or experience in facilities management.
  • Master’s degree or equivalent in environmental field.
  • Knowledge of environmental management systems (ISO 14001).
  • Knowledge of waste management and circular economy principles.
  • Experience with environmental auditing and compliance verification.
  • Understanding of climate change regulations and GHG reporting.
