Job summary

North Yorkshire Council is seeking a Refuse Driver to support household waste and recycling collections across North Yorkshire. You will drive a refuse collection vehicle, perform safety checks and follow routes to ensure a reliable service for residents.

The role requires experience with larger vehicles, good road safety knowledge and a proactive, team-oriented attitude. You will work outdoors in all weather and maintain high standards of punctuality and safety.

Qualifications

• Valid driving licence for the vehicle operated.
• Experience driving larger vehicles (refuse, HGV or similar).
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Safely drive and operate the council’s refuse collection vehicle.
• Carry out daily vehicle safety checks and report defects or maintenance issues.
• Follow allocated routes and collection schedules.
• Work closely with refuse collectors to complete daily collections safely and efficiently.
• Ensure all work complies with health and safety procedures.
• Take care when driving around residential streets, pedestrians and other road users.
• Assist with collection of household waste and recycling where required.
• Report missed collections, access problems and damaged bins to the appropriate person.
• Maintain a professional and courteous attitude when dealing with residents and the public.
• Keep the vehicle clean, tidy and in safe working condition.
• Follow council policies, waste-management procedures and environmental requirements.

Job Purpose

You will be responsible for safely driving and operating a refuse collection vehicle and supporting the collection of household waste and recycling across North Yorkshire. You will work as part of a team to provide a reliable, efficient and professional waste collection service to residents.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• You will safely drive and operate the council’s refuse collection vehicle.
• You will carry out daily vehicle safety checks and report any defects or maintenance issues.
• You will follow allocated routes and collection schedules.

Skills and Experience

You will ideally have:

• A suitable driving licence for the vehicle being operated.
