Job summary

Asda is seeking a Refrigeration Manager to shape and deliver Asda's refrigeration strategy across new stores, upgrades and models, driving long-term efficiency, sustainability and operational excellence.

You will oversee system design, project delivery, compliance with F‑gas regulations, and lifecycle management of the refrigeration estate, collaborating with property, construction, operations, sustainability and external consultants.

  • Detailed understanding of HFO and CO2 refrigeration systems.
  • UK recognised qualifications in Refrigeration & Air Condition systems.

Responsibilities

  • Refrigeration Strategy Development — Lead the creation and refinement of the long-term refrigeration strategy.
  • Estate Planning & Site Selection Input — Provide expertise during site selection, acquisitions and refits.
  • Refrigeration System Design Leadership — Define standards for system architecture and ensure designs meet efficiency and compliance.
  • Capital Investment Planning — Develop business cases for refrigeration investments and assist in budgeting.
  • Project Delivery & Implementation Oversight — Oversee end-to-end delivery of projects to meet specifications, quality, timelines and budget.
  • Compliance & Regulatory Assurance — Ensure refrigeration assets comply with F-gas regulations and safety standards.
  • Contractor & Supplier Management — Select, evaluate, and govern refrigeration contractors and suppliers.
  • Asset Performance & Optimisation — Monitor performance and identify efficiency improvements.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration — Act as refrigeration SME across teams to drive decisions.
  • Innovation & Futureproofing — Evaluate new technologies and sustainability innovations.

The Refrigeration Manager is responsible for shaping and delivering Asda's refrigeration strategy, ensuring all new sites, upgrades and models support long‑term efficiency, sustainability, and operational excellence. The role provides input into site selection and store design, leads system specification and oversees project implementation. They will also oversee the performance, compliance, and lifecycle management of the refrigeration estate. Working closely with property, construction, operations, sustainability, and external partners, the Refrigeration Manager ensures that all refrigeration solutions are safe, cost‑effective, energy‑efficient, and aligned with the business's strategic growth plans.

  1. Refrigeration Strategy Development

    Lead the creation and continuous refinement of the long‑term refrigeration strategy, ensuring alignment with future f-gas regulations, cost‑efficiency targets, operational performance and energy‑reduction initiatives.

  2. Estate Planning & Site Selection Input

    Provide specialist expertise during site selection, acquisitions, refits, and new store planning to ensure refrigeration feasibility, optimal layouts, and long‑term operational cost benefits.

  3. Refrigeration System Design Leadership

    Work closely with external consultants to define standards for system architecture (e.g., CO₂ systems, natural refrigerants, heat recovery) and work with internal stakeholders and external consultants to ensure designs meet efficiency, compliance, and business requirements.

  4. Capital Investment Planning

    Develop robust business cases for refrigeration investments, support annual budgeting and long‑range financial planning and assist in securing funding through executive approval.

  5. Project Delivery & Implementation Oversight

    Oversee end‑to‑end delivery of refrigeration projects-from scoping and tendering to installation and commissioning-ensuring they meet technical specifications, quality standards, timelines, and budget expectations.

  6. Compliance & Regulatory Assurance

    Ensure all refrigeration assets, installations, and operations adhere to F‑gas regulations, environmental standards, safety legislation, and industry best practice.

  7. Contractor & Supplier Management and Procurement

    Working with Asda procurement team, select, evaluate, and govern refrigeration contractors/consultants and manage day to day relationships. Drive performance, negotiate strategic agreements, and foster continuous improvement across the supply chain.

  8. Asset Performance & Optimisation

    Working closely with City FM, monitor estate wide refrigeration performance data to identify efficiency improvements, reliability risks, and proactive upgrade opportunities. Lead optimisation initiatives to reduce downtime, energy consumption, and maintenance costs.

  9. Cross‑Functional Collaboration

    Act as the refrigeration subject‑matter expert across property, store operations, maintenance, energy, and sustainability teams. Influence decision‑making and embed refrigeration considerations throughout key business processes.

  10. Innovation & Futureproofing

    Drive the evaluation and adoption of emerging refrigeration technologies, digital monitoring solutions, and sustainability innovations (e.g., natural refrigerants, energy recovery, predictive maintenance) to maintain competitive advantage. Through effective use of industry contacts and networking.
