Job summary

Bath & North East Somerset Council is seeking Recycling Advisors for the Household Waste Recycling Centre team. This role blends operational recycling duties with customer-facing Meet & Greet responsibilities to ensure a safe, welcoming visit while maximising recycling and reuse opportunities.

Hours are 37 plus contractual weekend working; outdoor work in all weather is required. Training will be provided, and you will be an ambassador for the Council's environmental objectives.

Qualifications

• Excellent customer service skills.
• Confident, courteous communication with members of the public.
• Experience in a customer-facing role.
• Good literacy and numeracy skills.
• Understanding of recycling and waste management practices.
• Awareness of health and safety requirements.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Ability to work as part of a team and independently when required.
• Willingness to undertake training and development.

Responsibilities

• Meet, greet and assist customers professionally.
• Check bookings, permits and proof of address.
• Direct customers to correct recycling and waste areas.
• Provide expert guidance to customers on segregation and disposal to maximise recycling.
• Actively identify opportunities to divert waste from landfill through recycling and reuse.
• Monitor containers and waste streams to ensure correct deposition and minimise contamination.
• Promote the site's reuse schemes and encourage donations of reusable items.
• Assist with safe handling and storage of recyclable materials.
• Carry out inspections of bays, skips and containers, reporting issues.
• Support site recycling, reuse and diversion targets through customer engagement.
• Identify hazardous or non-conforming waste and ensure proper management.
• Provide advice on sustainable waste management and home recycling options.
• Maintain records relating to site activities and waste streams.
• Ensure compliance with Health & Safety and Environmental procedures.
• Manage vehicle queues and site safety.
• Maintain a clean and safe working environment.
• Handle customer enquiries and resolve issues professionally.
• Act as an ambassador for environmental objectives and sustainability initiatives.
