An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our passionate and professional team at Russell Clinic a specialist rehabilitation and recovery inpatient ward in the heart of Exeter.

You will be workingwith a dynamic, motivated and skilled team to provide occupation therapyinterventions to adults who experience complex psychosis. Wewill enable you to learn the skills you need to thrive in the role, by offeringyou training anddevelopment opportunities. Inreturn, you will need to be motivated, flexible and eager to learn.

About you

This post issuitable for an experienced Recovery Support Worker with experience of workingin an inpatient setting, or someone with experience of working with people withenduring mental health diagnosis. Effectivecommunication is an essential skill for this role, so we expect you to haveexcellent verbal and written skills. You will be expected to keep clinicalrecords up to date and be proactive in engaging with service users.

You will oftenwork under pressure and without direct supervision, so we are looking forsomeone confident and capable. You will prioritise tasks, and work as part ofthe team to coordinate activities from a therapeutic timetable.

We follow the 5areas of wellbeing so desirably the post holder will have a level of fitnessand an understanding of how this contributes to someones recovery.

Main duties of the job

Under the daily supervision of mental health practitioners, the post holder will work as part of the multi-disciplinary team to support the delivery of recovery care plans for adults with a range of mental health presentations in the a rehabilitation inpatient setting and community. This will involve working across agencies e.g. Vocational Services, Primary Care, Complex Care Teams and Third sector organisations.

The post holder will work intensively with people to support them on the ward initially and in their home, preventing hospital admission and facilitating hospital discharge

The post holder will be expected to work to a clearly defined personal recovery plan outlining their role and the range of interventions required. This will include a significant monitoring role of people on behalf of the team.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Basic education
  • To complete care certificate within 6 months of employment , unless already obtained or evidence of equivalent agreed and signed off by appointing officer at interview, if not, if not this will be a trainee post until completion
  • Other evidence of training or demonstration of working in a mental health setting.
  • Previous care experience with people that have mental health diagnoses.
  • Knowledge of mental health and a basic understanding of physical health presentations
Experience
  • Previous employment /experience of working with people with mental health diagnosis in a support role or previous experience of working in different roles within mental health services.
  • Can you please demonstrate an awareness of safeguarding principles and explain a situation where you have followed safeguarding procedure.
  • Can you please describe how you make and sustain therapeutic relationships and what that means to you. Can you demonstrate an awareness of difficulties or obstacles there may be to sustaining these relationships, in relation to people with a mental health diagnosis of psychosis.
  • There may be times when you are required to work as an individual or run a group, can you demonstrate your ability to do this.
  • IT skills are key to this role, you will be working with complex record systems, recording patient notes and must have good time management skills.
  • It is important to use a range of communication skills working with this client group and with the wider team. Can you demonstrate how you use these? This extends into keeping good professional boundaries, can you explain what this means to you?
  • The service runs smoothly when the whole team is involved and we have regular meetings to ensure good organisation and communication. Can you demonstrate what team working skills you have?
  • Can you describe your experience of taking leadership and direction from qualified / senior staff.
  • This is a rehabilitation service, can you demonstrate your experience in providing practical support with daily living activities?
  • Due to the nature of the role, there may be times where you are required to respond quickly to physical and mental health emergencies, this will involve patient escalation. Please demonstrate your ability/experience in these scenarios and what skills you have used to manage challenging situations previously?
  • We are always aiming to improve our activity programme; the required candidate must be self-motivated and flexible when it comes to the demands of the environment.
  • To maintain confidentiality, empathy, compassion and patience towards individuals with mental health diagnosis.
  • Physical activity is part of the 5 pillars of wellbeing and we have regular swimming/cycling/walking groups, it would be desirable to have someone who is physically active and lives their life with this ethos.
  • As a rehabilitation ward we are always aiming to improve our activity timetable. If you have an interest or hobby that could form a group on the ward this would be fantastic.
  • We are working towards being fully self-catered on the ward, helping our members to plan, organise and cook meals for themselves and the entire ward group. Someone who is interested in cooking and nutrition would be an advantage. There is more training opportunities available for someone who would like to form a nutrition role on the ward.
  • Our client group often have Dual Diagnosis, struggling with substance misuse and alcohol dependency. Having experience working with these challenges would be a big strength.
