Job summary

The AA is hiring an HGV Recovery Driver to join our UK-wide service. You will safely recover vehicles, reassure customers, and work independently while upholding the AA standard of care. Expect to handle varied roadside situations with a calm, technical approach.

Eligible applicants hold a Category C driving licence with Driver CPC and tachograph card; CE is a plus. Shifts include evenings and weekends, with a location allowance and opportunities to progress within the AA.

Qualifications

• A full Category C (HGV Class 2) driving licence is essential.
• If you already hold a Category CE (HGV Class 1) licence — great! If not, we’ll support you in gaining it.
• A valid Driver CPC and a digital tachograph card.
• Flexibility to work shift patterns, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays.

Salary: Guaranteed minimum c. £39,340 for CE (HGV 1) license, £35,860 for C (HGV 2) license.

This includes a location allowance.

On Target Earnings: £45,435 for CE, £39,785 for C license.

Shifts: Rolling roster, work 18 days out of every 28, with two full weekends off.

Standard Shift Duration: 9 hours and 45 minutes, including a 45-minute break.

Flexibility Required: While standard shifts are under 10 hours, end-of-shift flexibility is essential. You may be required to work up to 12 hours (including breaks) depending on operational needs.

To be eligible for this role you must live within 25 miles or 1 hours travel from the depot.

As an HGV Recovery Driver, you’ll often work independently, but the moment you step out of your truck, you become a source of calm and confidence. With empathy and resilience, you’ll support members through stressful moments, using your technical expertise to recover vehicles safely and efficiently. Whether it’s transporting a vehicle to a garage or helping someone reach their destination, you’ll make a real difference in their day and their journey.
