Job summary

The Selection Partnership Ltd. is seeking a proven toolmaker for an established manufacturing partner. You will manufacture and modify diecast and plastic mould tooling from 2D drawings and 3D CAD, set up tooling for production, and advise on tooling design with Engineering.

Responsibilities include grinding and polishing, using lathe/milling/CNC/EDM machinery, dimensional checks, liaising with subcontractors, and maintaining tool records to meet customer drawings and production timelines.

Qualifications

  • Apprentice-trained toolmaker with engineering qualifications is preferred.
  • Experience in die casting and/or plastic mould tooling is essential.
  • Ability to read blueprints, drawings and interpret 3D CAD models.

Job description

My client is an established manufacturing company producing a wide range of plastics and metal components for a variety of customers and industries.

They are currently looking for a proven toolmaker to join their business. You will be responsible for: -

  • Manufacturing of new diecast / plastic mould tooling and tooling modifications from 2D tool drawings and 3D CAD.
  • Provide lead-times and hours on the scope of work required as and when requested.
  • Consult with Engineering and advise on tooling design where applicable.
  • Liaise with subcontractors and service providers as and when required.
  • Setting up tooling to produce die castings / plastic mouldings.
  • Assessment of tooling condition – ensuring they are safe and can run right first time on set up.
  • Repair damaged tooling as appropriate.
  • Reporting, when necessary, large repairs that will result in downtime, and external costs.
  • Work closely with quality identifying tool corrections to meet customer drawing requirements.
  • Support maintenance toolmakers as when requested to ensure production demands are met.
Primary Tasks/Activities – include, but not limited to: -
  • Grinding of parting lines and cavity pins.
  • Polishing of cores, cavities and runner systems using various media including diamond paste and polishing stones to achieve desired finish.
  • Use of all tool room machinery and equipment – for example, lathe, milling and grinding machines, CNC machinery, EDM machinery and measuring equipment such as shadowgraph, digital DRO and DTI, slip gauges micrometre and vernier callipers.
  • Final fitting of seal off faces, pins and moving cores.
  • Validation of external, incoming supplier process’s where applicable to tooling.
  • Preparing new tools for sampling including completion of necessary paperwork.
  • Where appropriate, complete dimensional checks of works completed.
  • Review of tool modification requests and reporting of scope of work to engineering dpt.
  • Stripping down, cleaning and bluing out of tooling to determine tooling condition, and longevity and repairing as appropriate.
  • Use of overhead crane and other toolroom lifting equipment.
  • Changing cores, slides and inserts of tooling variations in toolroom or production environment.
  • Assessment and problem solving with setters on diecasting machines to resolve production issues.
  • Replacing ejector pins, date codes and other cavity parts to meet deadlines and the safe efficient running of tools.
  • Repair, adjustment or correction of tools to meet customer drawings.
  • Consider and share ideas on tooling improvements to reduce running costs, improve efficiencies and prevent breakages.
  • Complete appropriate paperwork to maintain records as required and in line with company management document system.
  • Attend design review meetings as required.
  • Evaluate new tooling and report findings.
  • Attend and support engineering and engineering meetings.
Skills/Knowledge Required: -
  • Ideally you will be an apprentice trained toolmaker with ideally supporting qualifications in engineering and engineering practices.
  • An in-depth knowledge of die casting and or injection moulding environment or press tooling.
  • Can demonstrate previous experience of new tool manufacture.
  • Can demonstrate experience in mechanical engineering.
  • Ability to read blueprints, drawings and interpret 3D CAD models.
  • Knowledge of CAD software AutoCAD / SolidWorks would be an advantage but is not essential.
  • Attention to detail.
  • The ability or knowledge of CAD/CAM software would be great but again is not essential.
  • Good analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and have good interpersonal skills with peers and work colleagues around you.
