Job summary

Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS foundation Trust is seeking a Band 3 Speech and Language Therapy Assistant to support the Learning Disability Community Team. You will implement SLT-directed interventions, deliver training to individuals, families and carers, and support colleagues in clinical and training duties.

You will liaise with carers and other agencies, gather information, and help organise locations, hospitality and materials for clinical and training duties.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with clients with learning disabilities.
  • Ability to follow training and work under supervision of the SLT.
  • Good liaison with carers and multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

  • Deals with clients with learning disabilities and carers who may have complex needs or be under stress.
  • Undertakes patient assessments as advised by qualified staff.
  • Implements a range of treatments with clients independently.
  • Writes clinical records and letters; maintains documentation.
  • Liaises with SLT and regular team to revise treatment plans.

We have an exciting opportunity for you to join our Learning Disability Community Team within Birmingham Community Health Care NHS Foundation Trust, the largest community trust in the country.


You will be implementing a range of interventions specified by the Speech and Language Therapists and deliver training to individuals/families/carers and other professionals and regularly support colleagues. You will Liaise with carers and other agencies in agreement with the Speech and Language Therapists to gather and collate the necessary information and support the therapists in organising the location, hospitality, and materials related to clinical and training duties.

Mainduties

Clinicalresponsibilities


  • Dealswithclientswithlearningdisabilitiesandcarerswhomayhavecomplex needs and/or be under extreme stress.

  • Using own initiative, carries out clinical work with people who have learning disabilities who have communication and eating and drinking difficulties under the supervision of the SLT (Speech and Language Therapist) on occasions by telephone. Observes clients with eating and drinking problems. Completes a screeningchecklistandinformsthequalifiedSLToftheoutcome.Thiswillonly be following training and assessment of competencies.

  • Undertakes patient assessments as advised by qualified staff.

  • Implementsarangeoftreatmentswithclientsindependently.

  • Contributes to evaluation and modification of communication environments, advisingcarers,residentialhomes,daycentres etc.oncommunication timetables, communication passports and signing.

  • Writesclinicalrecordsandlettersindependentlyandreportswithsupport.

  • Negotiateswithprofessional,clientsandcarersinordertodeliverroutineclinicalwork.

  • Useskeyboardskillsandcomputerknowledgetoproducecustomised assessments, therapy resources and training materials.

  • Takesinitiativeforadmin/clericaltaskstoamaximumof30%oftheworking week eg. Answering the telephone, collecting/distributing post, replenishing supplies of standard documentation.

  • Workswithclientswhosebehaviourmaychallengesoastocauseharmtoself and others.

  • Workswithclientswhomaybeatriskofpotential/actualabuse.

  • Runsgroups,bothformalandinformal,aswellasindividualtreatmentprogrammes.

  • Carriesoutprescribedeatinganddrinkingprogrammeswrittenbya qualified SLT and can modify these within set parameters.

  • Managesinfectioncontrolrisksincludingthosefrombodilyfluids.

  • Carriesoutinvasiveproceduressuchasintensiveinteraction andsensoryinteraction.

  • Uses highly developed communication skills to explain information from assessment/therapyplanstoclients,carersandmultidisciplinaryteammembers.


Serviceevaluation/development


  • Contributestothedevelopmentofpoliciesbyproposingchangesatlocaland team level.


Training/support


  • Organiseslocation,hospitalityandmaterialsasagreedwiththeSLT.

  • Deliverstraininge.g.Makaton,communicationpassport,objectsofreference,to other members of the MDT, carers/parents etc.

  • Supportsapprentices,workexperiencehelpersandstudents –actsasamentor and identifies training needs.

  • Assistsintheinductionofnewlyqualifiedtherapistsandprovidesobservational experience for SLT students.

  • LiaiseswithSLTonaregularbasisandidentifieswhen delegated treatment plans need revising.

  • Participatesinnon-managerialclinicalsupervision.

  • ParticipatesinandreceivespeersupportfromotherSLTAs,assistantand practitioners from other professional groups.

  • Takes responsibility for fulfilling own professional training and development needsinconsultationwithlinemanagere.g.participationinclinicalexcellencenetworks.

  • Contributestoclinicalandmanagerial auditsandundertakesauditsofownand others’ work under direction.

  • ProducestherapyresourcesunderthedirectionofanSLTe.g.communication timetables/passports/keyrings, formal training packs and activity books.

  • Providesaservicewhichisculturally,linguistically,genderanddisability sensitive to meet the needs of the population of Birmingham.

  • Toundertakeotherdutiescommensuratewiththisgradeofpostinagreement with the relevant line manager.
