Job summary

Net Zero Careers seeks an Electrical & ICA Technician to test, commission and fault-find electrical, instrumentation, control and automation systems at water treatment sites across Birmingham, Walsall and surrounding areas.

Responsibilities

• Test and commission electrical, instrumentation, control and automation systems at water treatment sites.
• Open and inspect local electrical control panels using appropriate tools and testing equipment.
• Work through control panel HMIs to verify equipment operation.
• Carry out electrical testing, fault-finding and diagnostic work.
• Check mechanical equipment and report faults or incomplete work.
• Perform initial power-up checks including motor rotation and I/O testing.
• Test and commission pumps, VSDs, MCCs and related control systems.
• Install, configure, calibrate and commission field instrumentation (4-20 mA).
• Read and interpret electrical drawings and technical documentation.
• Complete commissioning sheets, test records and Site Acceptance Test docs.
• Follow health, safety, environmental, technical and quality standards.

ROLE OVERVIEW

As an Electrical & ICA Technician, you will test, commission and fault-find electrical, instrumentation, control and automation systems at water treatment sites.

The core of the role involves opening and inspecting local control panels, working through the HMI and using basic tools and testing equipment to confirm that systems are operating correctly. You will also inspect associated mechanical equipment and report any faults or issues to the wider engineering team.

This is a field-based role covering Birmingham, Walsall and the surrounding area, with occasional travel further afield. The role generally involves attending one site per day, with travel time paid door to door.

The employer is open to candidates at a junior level who have practical commissioning experience and hands-on experience working inside electrical control panels.

IMPORTANT ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION

To be considered for this role, you must have:

• A degree in Electrical Engineering.
• More than one year of relevant experience, including electrical commissioning work.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Carry out electrical testing, fault-finding and diagnostic work.
• Check associated mechanical equipment and report any faults, defects or incomplete work.
• Carry out initial power-up checks, including motor rotation and I/O point-to-point testing.
• Test and commission pumps, Variable Speed Drives, Motor Control Centres and associated control systems.
• Install, configure, calibrate and commission field instrumentation, including 4-20 mA signals.
• Read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics and technical documentation.
• Complete commissioning sheets, test records and Site Acceptance Test documentation.
• Follow all relevant health, safety, environmental, technical and quality requirements.

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS

• Additional formal electrical training or qualifications.
• Previous experience within the water or wastewater industry.
• Experience commissioning field instrumentation and 4-20 mA signals.
• Mechanical experience or an understanding of mechanical equipment.
• Experience working with water treatment control systems.

PAY, HOURS AND LOCATION

• Salary: Approximately £40,000, depending on experience.
• Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
• Location: Birmingham, Walsall and the surrounding area, with occasional travel further afield.
• Travel time: Paid door to door, from leaving home until arriving back home.
• Contract: Full-time.
