Randstad Education, on behalf of University of Birmingham, is seeking a qualified Counsellor to provide face-to-face, short-term psychological support to students on a part-time basis at the Birmingham campus.

Job description

We are seeking a qualified and experienced Counsellor to provide face-to-face, short-term (5-session model) psychological support to students at the University of Birmingham. This is a part time role for 12 hours per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays to commence from mid-November.

You will play a vital role in helping students navigate mental health challenges, academic stress, and personal difficulties to support their overall well-being and retention.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver high-quality, short-term (up to 5 sessions) individual counselling to students in person.

Manage a daily caseload of 4 client appointments alongside dedicated time for administrative tasks, case notes, and risk management.

Assess student needs, monitor risk, and refer onwards to secondary mental health services or internal support teams when necessary.

Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely clinical records in line with institutional data protection policies.

Requirements

Accreditation: Must hold current BACP Accreditation (or equivalent professional body membership, e.g., UKCP).

Supervision: Must have active, independent clinical supervision already in place.

Experience: Proven track record of delivering short-term/brief therapy interventions, ideally within a Higher/Further Education setting or working with young adults.

Skills: Strong risk assessment capabilities, confidence in autonomous decision-making, and excellent administrative efficiency.

Location: Birmingham Campus (Face-to-Face)

Block 1: Mid-November to 11th December

Block 2: Week commencing 11th January through end of April (excluding weeks commencing 22nd and 29th April)
