Job description

What will I be doing?

As a shop operative, you will be in charge of the daily running of our re-use shop, based at Barnstaple site, liaising with the re-use hub manager to ensure the shop is fully stocked and everything is properly stored or made ready for sale.

This will involve you:

• Merchandising stock, organising, preparing, pricing, and presenting donations for sale to increase sales and ensure customer satisfaction.
• Managing stock and communicating to the re-use hub manager what stock needs to be delivered.
• Operating the cash register, counting/reconciling cash and credit card receipts, processing returns and refunds.
• Ensuring goods are sold at appropriate values and all rejected items are disposed of appropriately.
• Making certain that collections and deliveries are arranged efficiently and cost-effectively.
• Maintaining the security of the shop premises, stock, and cash.

You'll be expected to promote the values of the shop and the charitable nature of the re-use scheme in Barnstaple, while providing excellent customer experience to encourage repeat business and the smooth, profitable running of the shop.

What are the requirements?

• You will be passionate about the environment and this re-use project, with prior retail experience and enthusiasm for providing excellent customer service.
• Knowledge of recycling and upcycling is preferred, or a willingness to develop it quickly, along with understanding of stock management, merchandising, and handling financial aspects of retail, including:
• A flexible attitude to shift work and weekends.
• The confidence to work alone initially in the re-use shop (until volunteers are recruited).
• Excellent teamwork skills, as you will also work closely with site staff on the HWRCs.
