Job summary

A prestigious NHS Trust is seeking a Plastic Surgeon to join their department. This role, commencing in October 2025, offers a unique opportunity to develop clinical and surgical skills specializing in Skin Oncology, with a focus on transitioning candidates to independent practice. Qualifications

  • CCT in Plastic Surgery or equivalent by the interview date.
  • Demonstrable interest in Skin Oncology.

Responsibilities

  • Perform independent day case minor surgical skin procedures.
  • Provide support for candidates transitioning to independent consultant roles.
  • Engage in teaching medical students and junior doctors.

Job description

The appointment is to commence in October 2025 for a fixed term period of 12 months. A FRCS (Plast) or equivalent is essential. The post does not award a National Training Number. As this post is not recognised as a 'training post', full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required. The duties of this post are appropriate to an individual holding a Certificate of Completion of Training in Plastic Surgery

The post is ideal for candidates wishing to pursue a career in Plastic Surgery with a subspecialty interest in Skin Oncology with an aim of supporting candidates transitioning from supervised trainee to becoming an independent and confident consultant colleague. There are significant opportunities within the Plastic Surgery department to expand on clinical, operative, educational and academic skills which will assist candidates in becoming well rounded Surgical Skin Oncologists.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at point of application
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • FRCS (Plast) or equivalent
  • MRCS or equivalent
  • Candidates must be within 6 months of CCT date or equivalent by the time of interview.

Desirable

  • GMC Specialist Register in Plastic Surgery
  • Certificate of Completion in Training in Plastic Surgery or equivalent
  • Higher degree (MD, MS, MChir)

Clinical experience

Essential

  • Evidence of higher training and specialist interest in Plastic Surgery
  • Demonstrable interest in Skin Oncology
  • Competent in performing independent day case minor surgical skin procedures

Desirable

  • ATLS trained
  • Previous experience in skin cancer management including SLNB and lymph node dissections
  • Completed Dermascopy course and/or EMSB course

Research

Essential

  • Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate/Basic understanding of research methods and statistics (Depending on level of post)

Desirable

  • Publications in Peer reviewed journals related to Skin Oncology

Teaching and training

Essential

  • Experience of teaching medical students and junior doctors (if considered appropriate to the post)

Personal attributes

Essential

  • Demonstrates behaviour consistent with PROUD values (see appendix)
  • Good written communication skills including IT
  • The applicant must demonstrate skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking the English language that enables effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues as set out in the GMC' good medical practice (2013).

  • Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio
