Rating Officer

Contract Type: Permanent

Hours: Full Time, 37 hours per week

Location of post: Civic Centre, Neath, SA11 3QZ

Job Description:

As a Rating Officer, you'll be part of a small team managing Business Rates accounts and associated Business Improvement District (BID) Levy accounts. Your role will involve ensuring effective billing, collection, and recovery processes, with a customer-focused approach to maximize revenue while meeting legal and statutory requirements.

You will provide professional services handling queries related to billing, collection, and recovery of business rates via telephone, face-to-face, emails, and letters. Supporting the Senior Rating Officer, you'll play a crucial role in helping the Council maximize its resources to achieve the best outcomes for the borough.

Main Duties:
  1. Develop and maintain good working and technical knowledge of Business Rates.
  2. Handle day-to-day rating duties, including maintaining accurate records, calculating and updating accounts (including transitional arrangements, awards, and relief reviews).
  3. Respond to customer inquiries professionally and accurately in writing, by telephone, and in person, adhering to legislative and procedural requirements.
  4. Utilize IT systems to manage and record Business Rates data.

  • Dealing with customers professionally
  • Strong financial and numeracy skills
  • Excellent computer skills, proficient in all Microsoft Office packages
  • Ability to work independently, using problem-solving skills and initiative to provide customer-focused support
Qualifications:

A minimum of 5 GCSEs or equivalent, including Maths and English.
