Job summary

MacGregor Black is partnering with a leading UK retail group to appoint a Range Controller in Ealing. The role leads the end-to-end range review programme across a diverse product portfolio, establishing a governance framework and ensuring commercial decisions are supported by robust analysis and implemented across the business.

Qualifications

• Significant experience in Range, Category, Buying, Merchandising or Commercial Planning in retail/wholesale/FMCG.
• Proven experience managing end-to-end range review programmes.
• Previous people leadership experience to develop a high-performing team.
• Strong commercial acumen and understanding of impact on sales, margin and stock.
• Excellent analytical skills to translate data into recommendations.
• Strong programme management capability coordinating multiple workstreams.

Responsibilities

• Manage stock transition and exit plans to minimise residual stock and cost.
• Establish reporting and governance forums to monitor delivery and resolve issues.
• Influence senior stakeholders to align with wider business objectives.

This is a pivotal commercial leadership position responsible for overseeing the end-to-end range review programme across a large and diverse product portfolio. You will establish a clear and consistent approach to range governance, ensuring commercial decisions are supported by robust analysis and successfully implemented across the wider business.

Leading a team of range professionals, you will work closely with Category, Buying, Supply Chain, Operations, Finance and Depot teams to coordinate range activity, manage dependencies and ensure changes are delivered accurately and on time.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead, coach and develop the range team, creating a culture of accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement.
• Own the end-to-end range review programme across multiple categories and business areas.
• Develop and maintain a structured range governance framework, ensuring decisions are commercially robust and effectively controlled.
• Partner with Category and Buying teams to translate category strategies into clear and actionable range plans.
• Coordinate range implementation across Supply Chain, Operations, Commercial and Depot functions.
• Ensure new listings, delistings, substitutions and range changes are delivered accurately and within agreed timescales.
• Use customer, sales, space, margin and operational data to identify opportunities and support range decisions.
• Assess the commercial and operational risks associated with proposed range changes, developing appropriate mitigation plans.
• Improve range productivity by identifying duplication, underperformance and gaps within the existing portfolio.
• Manage stock transition and exit plans to minimise residual stock, availability issues and unnecessary cost.
• Establish clear reporting, performance measures and governance forums to monitor delivery and resolve issues.
• Influence senior stakeholders and challenge constructively to ensure range decisions support wider business objectives.
• Drive continuous improvement across range review processes, systems and ways of working.

What We’re Looking For:

• Significant experience within Range, Category, Buying, Merchandising or Commercial Planning in a retail, wholesale or FMCG environment.
• Proven experience managing complex, end-to-end range review or range change programmes.
• Previous people leadership experience, with the ability to develop and motivate a high-performing team.
• Strong commercial acumen and an understanding of how range decisions affect sales, margin, stock and customer performance.
• Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to translate complex data into clear commercial recommendations.
• Strong project and programme management capability, with experience coordinating multiple workstreams and stakeholders.
• Good understanding of supply chain, stock management and operational execution.
• Confident stakeholder manager with the ability to influence senior commercial and operational leaders.
• Highly organised, detail-focused and comfortable working within a fast-paced, complex organisation.
