Rail Operator at South Western Railway

As a Rail Operator, you will be at the heart of ensuring trains are safely and efficiently dispatched and stations are presented to the highest standards. You will provide the most up-to-date travel information for our customers and assist them in reaching their destinations safely and on time.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  1. Safely dispatch trains from the platform, ensuring all customers are clear of the train whilst observing the correct signal. Normal colour vision is required.
  2. Offer passenger assistance, such as support with luggage or helping customers board and alight trains using ramps.
  3. Keep customers updated about their journeys through announcements and face-to-face interactions, bringing your personality to create a personal experience.
  4. Maintain station standards by performing tasks like cleaning, safety checks, rubbish clearance, and assisting customers, ensuring safety and quality standards are met.

Requirements:

  • Organised, proactive, and able to prioritise tasks efficiently.
  • Capable of handling repetitive tasks under pressure.
  • Excellent communication skills and enjoyment in working with people.
  • Confident in approaching and talking to new people.
  • Passionate about doing the right thing; nothing is too much trouble.
  • This is a safety-critical role requiring passing a medical, including vision and hearing tests.

Applicants requiring a visa must have at least 6 months remaining at the time of appointment. Full-time training is provided, and commitment is required.

Working pattern:

Our services operate daily (except Christmas Day). You must be able to work shifts at all times, including evenings and weekends. The typical schedule is 25 hours/week over 5 days, usually Monday to Friday, 16:00 – 21:00.
