Job description

Job Title: Rail Operator at South Western Railway

As a Rail Operator at South Western Railway, you will be at the heart of ensuring trains are safely and efficiently dispatched and stations are presented to the highest standards. You will provide the most up-to-date travel information for our customers and assist them in reaching their destinations safely and on time.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

1. Safely dispatching trains from the platform, ensuring all customers are clear of the train whilst observing the correct signal is showing. Normal colour vision is required for this position.
2. Offering passenger assistance to those who need it, including support with luggage or helping customers board and alight trains with ramps.
3. Keeping customers updated about their journeys through announcements and face-to-face interactions, adding your personality to create a personal experience.
4. Maintaining station standards by cleaning, checking safety and functionality, clearing rubbish, and assisting customers, ensuring safety and quality standards are met.

Requirements:

• Organized, proactive, and able to prioritize tasks efficiently.
• Capable of handling repetitive tasks under pressure.
• Excellent communication skills and enjoy working with people.
• Confident in approaching and talking to new people.
• Passionate about doing the right thing; customer service is a priority.
• This is a safety-critical role requiring passing a medical, including vision and hearing tests.

Applicants requiring a visa must have at least 6 months remaining at the time of appointment. Full-time training is provided, and commitment to this is essential.

Working Pattern:

The station operates daily (except Christmas Day), requiring shift work at all times of the day and week.

You will work an average of 37 hours per week with additional hours on Sundays as part of a 6-week rolling roster. Shifts include early, late, night, weekend, and bank holiday shifts, typically from:

0600-1400 / 1400-2200 / 2200-0600
