Mobile Maintenance Technician – Freight Rail Engineering
Based Along the M1 Corridor – Derby | Nottingham | Leicester
Full-Time | Permanent | Salary: Up to £44,000 + Overtime
Van + Fuel Card Provided | Tools, Uniform & Full PPE Supplied
The Opportunity
We’re looking for a Mobile Freight Maintenance Technician to join a nationally respected rail engineering team, working hands-on with freight locomotives and rolling stock.
This is a mobile role—ideal for a skilled engineer who thrives in varied environments and wants to contribute directly to maintaining the backbone of the UK supply chain.
What You’ll Do

  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on freight locomotives and rolling stock across multiple UK locations in Derby, Leicester and Nottingham 9M1 corridor).
  • Carry out diagnostics, electrical and mechanical repairs, and safety-critical inspections.
  • Ensure all rail assets meet performance and safety standards.
  • Complete all technical documentation accurately and legibly.
  • Follow safety policies, method statements, and risk assessments while maintaining site cleanliness.
  • Work both independently and collaboratively as part of a flexible mobile team.

Your Shift Pattern
This role follows a rotational schedule with a mixture of shift types to support nationwide freight operations:

  • Standard Day Shifts will be a mix of the following with rest days in between:
    07:00 – 17:00 (10 hrs)
    07:00 – 15:00 (8 hrs)
  • Afternoon Shifts:
    13:00 – 22:00
  • Rest Days:
    Allocated during the week based on rotation
  • Weekend Work:
    Required on a rotating basis
  • Reserve (AR) Shifts:
    Standby shifts as needed to support demand

Overtime is available and paid in addition to salary.

What You’ll Need

  • NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering discipline (mechanical/electrical).
  • Previous hands-on experience working on freight locomotives ideally.
  • Full, clean UK Driving Licence.
  • Must be able to pass a railway medical (including drugs & alcohol test).
  • Clean criminal record (DBS check required).
  • Willingness to travel and stay away overnight as required (But not very often).
  • Must be based within the M1 Corridor – Derby, Nottingham, or Leicester area.
