Job overview

The post holder will work in the Oxford Breast Imaging Centre assisting the radiographic and radiological staff in the smooth running of the department. The Oxford Breast Imaging Centre delivers the NHS Breast Screening Programme to the women of Oxfordshire in a three year cycle and undertakes breast examinations for the symptomatic service.

The post holder will work closely with all staff, in particular radiologists, radiographers and clerical staff in providing a high standard of care.

The post holder must meet the requirements of the Health & Safety at Work Act (1974), the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations, the Ionising Radiation Regulations and Data Protection Act (1984) and any subsequent legislation.

The post holder will work in most sections of the department.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a dynamic flexible individual to join our Radiology team, as Radiology Assistants.

This role is to support the Oxford Breast Imaging Centre based at the Churchill Hospital.You will be required to work as a Radiology Assistant in the front line of patient care, assisting with various examinations carried out in areas including mammography and ultrasound.

Radiology assistants contribute to the smooth running of the Radiology Department and the candidate will work closely with all staff, in particular Radiographers and Radiologists to provide a high standard of patient care.

Previous experience in health care is preferable. An induction programme and relevant training will be given

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Introduce and welcome clients in the waiting area, confirming their identity according to the Trust Policy.
  • Show compassion, sensitivity and understand the anxiety and fear prior to the client’s procedure.
  • To exercise discretion and maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Maintain the client’s dignity and privacy at all times.
  • To demonstrate good communication skills when dealing with clients, relatives and members of the Multidisciplinary Team, utilising sensitivity, empathy and the ability to manage conflict.
  • Act as a client’s escort taking them to the changing rooms, preparing them for the relevant procedure and escorting them to the correct area for the procedure.
  • To act with tact and empathy as a chaperone during examination/procedure.
  • To assist with client moving and handling and equipment moving, using correct methods and equipment as required (as per Manual Handling Policy).
  • To undertake Mandatory Training as required by the Trust, to develop and increase skills, to improve the service to the public.
  • To work in some late symptomatic clinics on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10:30am-6:30pm.
  • Assisting Radiographers and Radiologists performing x-ray and ultrasound procedures on clients referred to the Breast Imaging Centre including biopsies and assisting with MRI breast biopsies within main Radiology at the Churchill hospital.
  • Explaining to clients the preparatory requirements regarding undressing/dressing and assisting the clients when this is necessary.
  • Assisting in the care and reassurance of clients undergoing imaging procedures.
  • Assistance with the moving and handling of clients.
  • Inputting client data onto CRIS.
  • Carrying out routine quality control checks on ultrasound machines.
  • Collating clinics and checking images.
  • General photocopying.
  • To have responsibility for sending biopsy specimens to pathology.
  • Help to maintain high standards of cleanliness of equipment and accessories, in addition to keeping examination rooms and changing areas clean, tidy and supplied with linen and relevant disposable items (e.g. syringes, needles).
  • Liaising with porters/wards regarding transit of clients to and from the department.
  • Assisting in stock rotation of supplies.
  • Assisting with the preparation of the examination rooms for imaging procedures.
  • To be aware of and comply with the relevant Ionising Radiation Protection Regulations and Local Rules.
  • To maintain a professional appearance and attitude at all times, working together and supporting other members of the team in a polite and helpful manner.
  • To contribute to the maintenance of accurate data when entering information onto the departmental computer system.
  • In addition to the key areas listed, staff are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required.
  • To be aware of and comply with Trust policies, procedures and legal requirements including Health & Safety regulations, COSHH, Manual Handling Regulations, Data Protection Act etc.
  • Preparing paperwork and supplies for the mobile breast imaging vans.
  • Maintaining adequate daily supplies of accessory items and ongoing review of stock levels.
  • Carrying out clerical duties when required including film filing.
  • Contributing to the department’s Quality Assurance and Audit Programme.
  • Participating in all relevant in-house training.
  • Participating in Saturday morning and other late weekday clinics when required.
  • Assist in and supervise training of new Radiology Assistants as required.
