Job description

Job Summary

The Radiology Service delivers a diagnostic and treatment service for approximately 600,000 patients a year on 6 sites, the Ultrasound department is a major contributor to these examinations.

The job holder will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the ULTRASOUND department, carrying out policies and procedures as specified by the Trust and Radiology Management Team. They will undertake a wide range of duties to clinically support the Sonographers and Radiologists and be primarily responsible for the care of patients attending for Ultrasound examinations.

Duties will include assisting staff with interventional procedures such as biopsies and injections and adhering to aseptic techniques.

Chaperoning is a key part of the role. Patients attending the department can range from the unconscious to the fully mobile with uncooperative, incapacitated, anaesthetised, partially resuscitated, disorientated patients and those with special needs, physical and mental disabilities. Some patients can exhibit antisocial or threatening behaviour.

The post holder will work to departmental protocols and schemes of work, including administrative tasks.

The job holder may occasionally be required to work at any site with a small commitment to weekend work.

Effective communication is paramount with both the patient and other Team members to ensure the department runs safely and effective.

Ideally the candidate will thrive when working in a busy team.

Main duties of the job

The role involves a large clinical component which includes general help and assisting the Sonographer/Radiologist throughout the patients Ultrasound examination.

The daily role involves escorting patients in and out of the examination rooms and preparing the patient for the Ultrasound examination. This involves assisting with moving and handling of the patients who are immobile in a manner that is safe for all concerned.

You will be asked to chaperone patients, offering reassurance and staying in attendance with difficult patients and intimate examinations.

An important part of the role involves caring for the patients during and following interventional ultrasound procedures, which includes preparing trolleys and conducting aseptic technique whilst caring for the patient.

There is an element of administrative tasks to include registering the patient, updating patient records, bookings, extraction of work lists and all other associated RIS activities. Answering and dealing with telephone calls is a daily task.

You will be responsible for maintaining high standards of cleanliness of clinical equipment/ultrasound rooms, to minimise the spread of infection. You will also be required to monitor and order stock within the department.

The role is varied and you will be expected to help in all of the above areas.

The Ultrasound department can be extremely busy & the work can be unpredictable/fast paced but the Team is supportive & inclusive. This role is very niche & the main aim is to assist & facilitate a smooth/efficient running of the department & not to be directly involved with undertaking the Ultrasound examination.

The shifts are mainly weekdays, there are no night shifts to be covered just a small commitment to weekend/ evening work.
