Job description

Theopportunity has arisen for a radiographer to join our ever expanding,friendly CT Team.

PreviousCT experience is preferable; however, candidates who meet the other minimumessential criteria (qualifications) will be considered and will be supportedthrough a training program under annex 21 of the AfC terms and conditions.

Thesuccessful candidate will need to be an enthusiastic, highly motivated,hardworking, team player who is committed to flexible working. This postoffers a fantastic opportunity to gain experience participating in a widerange of examinations which could including Trauma, Cardiac, Colonography andInterventional oncology.

Main duties of the job

TheCT service will be delivered across 3 sites; Leeds General Infirmary (LGI),St James and Seacroft Hospital (SCH) due to the recent development of aCommunity Diagnostic Centre.

TheCT fleet consists of both Siemens and GE scanners, boasting a top of therange, Siemens Force.

Weare a busy unit undertaking over 75,000 examinations per year. The successfulapplicant/s will be expected to assess, authorise, and undertake a wide rangeof CT examinations; working closely with multi-disciplinary teams and serviceusers to acquire diagnostic images with the lowest radiation dose practicableto promote treatment and guide ongoing care.

Asa Band 6 Radiographer, you will be required to work autonomously and supportthe specialist training of students and apprentices. There will be acommitment to a shift system to cover the 24/7 workload.

Job responsibilities

Thejob holder will be a state registered Radiographer with the HCPC and work asan autonomous Radiographic Practitioner undertaking a wide range of CTexaminations.

Thejob holder will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team providing a highquality radiology service for patients, adhering to policies and proceduresas specified by the Trust and Radiology Management Team.

Thejob holder is responsible for performing with the highest standard of patientcare and technical practice in their clinical area whilst imaging patientsand will adhere to the codes of conduct of behaviours of the professionalbody, The College of Radiographers and the HCPC. They will ensure theinterests of the patient are maintained at all times, including acting as apatients advocate as necessary.

Thereis a requirement to participate in a 24/7 shift pattern.

PrincipleDuties & Areas of Responsibility

Comply with LTHT Radiation Safetypolicies including Local Rules and Employers Procedures in line with NationalRegulations eg IRR17 and IRMER2017

Work to local protocols.

Act in the role of Operator* whilecarrying out all aspects of clinical imaging employing the appropriate workareas Protocols *as defined in IR(ME)R 2017

Following entitlement will act inthe role of Practitioner* in accordance with LTHT IR(ME)R Employersprocedures and following departmental protocols to justify and authorisemedical exposures

Act as a patient advocate inradiation protection issues.

Ensure patients have given informedconsent prior to radiographic examinations and where necessary advise them ofthe potential risks

Apply a high level of manualdexterity in acquiring accurate, high quality diagnostic images, adaptingstandard technique when necessary.

Operate advanced software onspecialist radiological equipment, requiring excellent hand-eye co-ordinationand manual dexterity.

Review images, and identify and actupon any abnormalities detected and where necessary, to seek advice whenadditional images may be required prior to patient departure from thedepartment.

Ensure that images are presentedfor reporting purposes in a timely and accurate manner.

Ensure appropriate infectioncontrol measures are utilised, paying particular attention to personalprotection as well as the management of equipment and linen contaminated bybodily fluids.

Responsible for the care, comfortand clinical well-being of the patient during the radiological examination.This includes the monitoring or administration of pre-prescribed oxygen underdirect supervision

Liaison with safeguarding andexternal agencies when suspicion of patient in danger, for example, childprotection team

Taking an active role in audit,development and research (on an occasional basis)

Understand the emergency proceduresin the departments worked in and responsibilities in a MAJAX

To cannulate patients andadminister medicines under appropriate clinical prescription or Patient groupdirective.

Demonstrate reflective practicebased on knowledge and skills so as to formulate and deliver diagnosticimaging based on sound knowledge of evidence-based practice and imagingoptions using clinical assessment, reasoning and skills and knowledge ofother techniques.

Administrative/OperationalResponsibilities:

To effectively liaise with alldisciplines of staff

Participate in the safe transfer ofpatients and equipment within the department and hospital, using manualhandling guidelines and risk assessments.

Communicate negotiated changes tostaff rosters to a senior radiographer.

Organise personal workload in linewith clinical priorities.

Report deficits in the dataintegrity of the Radiology Information System (RIS) and Picture ArchivingCommunication System (PACS).

Report clinical, non-clinical andradiation incidents in line with Trust and departmental risk managementpolicies.

Enter accurate patient andexamination data into RIS and

Maintain accurate records at alltimes.

Understand the contingenciesrequired when electronic systems fail.

Familiar with the range oftechnical applications available on Imaging Equipment.

Ensure that equipment faults arereported to the relevant Senior Radiographer.

Assist in regular Quality Assurance(QA), including equipment testing.

Care for, check and maintain highstandards of cleanliness of clinical equipment to minimise spread ofinfection

Maintaining high standards ofcleanliness in examination rooms to minimise spread of infection

Ensure safe disposal of linen andclinical waste from the department

As part of the radiology teamensure all equipment is maintained to a high standard and used appropriately.

Multi-disciplinaryTeam working and Communication Skills:

Assess specific communication needsof individual patients, where there may be barriers with communication e.g.complex/sensitive nature of information.

Communicate effectively andempathetically with patients and their escorts prior to, during and after anexamination.

Work as part of themulti-disciplinary team within and without the radiology department, takingresponsibility for defined tasks as determined by a Senior Radiographer.

Act as a source of information forRadiology Assistants and students

Maintain effective verbal and/orwritten communication and working relationships, with patients, colleagues,other hospital staff, relatives and visitors

Recognise the potential forconflict in relationships and seek to minimise this and contribute toeffective communication and team working.

Ensure that the confidentiality ofall information gained in the course of undertaking the role is safeguardedand maintained in accordance with professional, local and national guidelinesand regulations e.g. Data Protection Act (1998).

Recognise and report when apatients well-being may be at risk by reporting to safeguarding

Informationand Record Keeping:

Ensure written and electronicrecords are maintained accurately and timely for self and others.

Ensure the computerised picturearchiving and communication system is the accurate record of the examinationsundertake on every patient imaged.

Participate in ethically approvedaudit projects, including gathering evidence for best practice assessment,either of their own work, that of the department or others, as required.

Otherduties:

Assist in promoting the overallaims of the department.

Assist in the supervision andclinical instruction of undergraduate radiography students and othertrainees.

When required provide mentorshipand/or preceptorship support

Complete formalised weekly reportforms for under-graduate radiography students, in accordance with Universityrequirement

Work with others to evaluate use ofresources to develop high standards of patient care and achieve value formoney initiatives.

Maintain and develop an appropriatelevel of professional knowledge and understanding to enable the safe deliveryof practice.

Participate in the individualperformance review system.

Participate in personal developmentneeds that may be identified by the team manager or in the appraisal processin an agreed timeframe.

Responsible for own mandatorytraining and ensure it is up to date

Supervise safe work practices ofNHS staff and students in a hazardous environment.

Attend departmental meetings whenrequired

Person Specification
Experience
  • Substantial experience working as a CT radiographer (or willing to work towards a training programme under annex 21)
  • Knowledge of a wide range of general and specialised radiography e.g. through academic study at post graduate study or equivalent. (or willing to work towards a training programme under annex 21)
  • Ability to maintain a safe working environment, following trust and national policies and procedures including applying IR(ME)R (2017) and IRR(2017)
  • Knowledge of Iodinated Contrast Media risks and exclusions including recognising the signs and symptoms of a reaction
  • Knowledge of current protocols in CT for key pathways
  • Knowledge of patient diversity and how to modify radiographic technique
  • Knowledge of pathologies which may affect patient management, and radiographic technique
Qualifications
  • BSc (or equivalent) in Diagnostic Radiography
  • State Registration (HCPC)
  • Current NHS experience and evidence
  • Evidence of CPD to satisfy HCPC requirements
  • Attendance at further course such as IV cannulation, Student Assessment, Red Dot etc
Additional Requirements
  • Commitment to undergo all training requirements of the post
  • Ability to wear radiation monitoring device
